Investigation of Al Based Amorphous Nanocrystalline Alloys Majid Tavoosi m tavoosi@ma iut ac ir Date of submission Apr 2012 Department of Materials EngineeringIsfahan University of Technology 84156 83111 IranSupervisor Dr Fatollah Karimzadeh Karimzadeh f@cc iut ac ir Supervisor Dr Mohamad Hossain Enayati ena78@cc iut ac ir Advisor Dr Hyoun Seop Kim hskim@postech ac kr Department Graduate Coordinate Program Coordinator Dr Masoud Panjepour Department of Materials Engineering Isfahan University of Technology 84156 83111 Isfahan Iran Department of Materials Engineering Pohung University of Technology POSTECH Korea AbstractThe goal of this study is investigation of Al base amorphous nanocrystalline materials inorder to improve glass forming ability and thermal stability of these materials To studythe thermal behavior and kinetic of crystallization of produced samples the X raydiffraction XRD differential thermal analysis DTA and high resolution transitionelectron microscopy HRTEM methods has been used The theoretical calculationsshowed that the glass forming ability and thermal stability of Al Fe alloying system is sohigh and Ni Ti and Nb are the best choice for using as alloying elements in this system The performed mechanical alloying in Al80Fe20 Al80Fe10Ni10 Al80Fe10Ti10 andAl80Fe10Nb10 showed that only in Al80Fe10Ni10 and Al80Fe10Ti10 alloys amorphous phasecan be formed The produced amorphous phases in these two alloys exhibits one stagecrystallization at temperature up that 850oC on heating and the activation energy forcrystallization is about 300 kJ mol which is more than other Al base amorphous alloys Moreover the effect of simultaneous presence of Ti and Ni on glass forming ability andthermal stability of amorphous phase in Al80Fe10Ti5Ni5 alloy was also investigated Theresults showed that the thermal stability of amorphous phase in Al80Fe10Ti5Ni5 alloy ismore than Al80Fe10Ni10 and Al80Fe10Ti10 alloys The crystallization temperature forAl80Fe10Ti5Ni5 alloy is about 950oC which is so higher than other Al base amorphousalloys 250 400oC Keywords Al based amorphous alloys nano quasicrystalline materials crystallizationkinetic non isothermal method 1
