Adsorption of Cyanide from Aqueous Solutions by Wheat Wastes Ilnaz Rafiee Ilnazrafiee@yahoo com 28 03 2012 Departman of Civil Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiAmir Taebi Harandi amirth@cc iut ac irHasti Hashemi nejad H hasheminejad@cc iut ac irAbstract Cyanide is often found as an environmental pollutant in the effluent of various industries such as metalplating procedure gold exploitation photography and pesticide production The consumption rate ofdifferent salts of cyanide in industries is estimated 2 3 million ton per year Numerous procedures have been utilized in order to remove cyanide from industrial effluents Amongthese methods adsorption is considered one of the most common methods for decreasing and removal ofcyanide from industrial effluents Because of the biodegradability low cost and abundance of agriculturalwastes the evaluation of the capacity of these materials in removing different pollutants from water andwastewater has been taken into consideration lately In the recent study adsorbtion of cyanide through use of wheat bran treated by silver nitrate isinvestigated The effects of different parameters on adsorption as initial concentration in range of 50 to 150mg L dosage of adsorbent in range of 1 2 to 2 4 g L contact time in range of 2 to 270 minutes agitationspeed in range of 120 to 200 round per minutes and adsorbent particle size in range of smaller than 150 to600 micrometer are studied According to the results optimum condition for cyanide adsorption throughcorresponding adsorbent for concentrations 50 and 80 mg L contact time is 270 minutes and forconcentrations 120 and 150 mg L is 120 minutes agitation speed is 160 round per minutes and particle sizeis smaller than 150 micrometer Capability of this adsorbent for elimination of cyanide in this condition ismore than 99 Adsorbtion isotherm is in accordance with BET model and maximum capacity of adsorbtion of cyanidethrough corresponding adsorbent in optimum condition obtained in laboratory is 52 37 mg cyanide per gadsorbent Considering the results obtained from variance analyse all the perameters in this study aremeaningful As the over all out come of the research we can announce that wheat bran treated by silvernitrate used in this study is able to eliminate cyanide from aqueous environment and can be replaced bycommon adsorbent like activated carbon as a economic and capable adsorbent in purification of wastewaterpoluted with cyanide Keywords Adsorption cyanide wheat waste silver nitrite
