Local Buckling of Thick Laminated Composite Plates Based on Higher Order Zig Zag Theory Using the Finite Strip Method Soltanali Mohamadi Monfared s mohamadimonfared@cv iut ac ir Date of Submission March 13 2012 Department of Civil Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Dr Mojtaba Azhari Mojtaba@cc iut ac ir Advisor Dr Bijan Boroomand boroomand@cc iut ac irAbstract Laminated composite materials are used in most of engineering applications such as aerospaceindustries marine applications transportation and so because of their lightness resistanceagainst corrosion and very high strenght to weight ratio So it seems necessary to investigatemechanical behavior of these materials to gain an optimum design In particular the analysesof buckling problems are important due to their complicated mechanism in comparison withstatic problems Therefore lots of researchers have studied the behavior of laminated plates andhave presented different theories in this field These theories can be divided into two groups The first group is equivalent single layer theories which include classical laminated platetheory first order shear deformation theory and higher order shear deformation theory Thesecond group is layer wise which are classified to discrete layer and zig zag theories Exactresults of the problem show that equivalent single layer theories don t have enough accuracy inthick plates since they don t consider interface continuity of transverse shear stresses Layer wise theories are developed to solve this deficiency In discrete layer theories the number ofunknown parameters depend on the number of layers and so these theories are inefficient foranalyzing thick plates with many layers Because of independence of the number of unknownparameters to the number of layers in zig zag theories this deficiency was resolved Localbuckling of the thick laminated composite plates is investigated in this thesis using the higher order zig zag theory presented by Cho and Parmerter in conjunction with the finite stripmethod For this purpose the formulation of plates buckling using the zig zag theory with thefinite strip method was developed then a computer code was developed in MATLABenvironment Local buckling load coefficient vs different length to width ratios for differentboundary conditions were represented as tables and graphs Buckling load coefficients fordifferent layers and orientations were adopted too Finally it is shown that it s useful toemploy zig zag theory for laminated composite plates specially thick laminated compositeplates since this theory shows the kinematic of the plate better than the other theories Keywords Laminated plates local buckling zig zag theory shear deformation theory finite strip method
