Equilibrium Thermodynamics and Kinetics Studies of Lead Pb Sorption from Aqueous Solution by Poly acrylic acid Bentonite Nanocomposite Hamidreza Rafiei Rafiee 84@gmail com Date of Submission August 6 2012 Department of Soil Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Dr Mehran Shirvani Shirvani@cc iut ac irAbstract With the rapid development of modern industries the environment has faced more and morecontamination than in the past Heavy metals are major contaminants of the environment Among theheavy metals lead is one of the most common and toxic pollutants released into the natural waters Various methods have been used for removal of metals from waters and wastewaters Among them adsorption processes have received much attention due to their economical applicability In general adsorbents are highly porous particles in order to ensure adequate surface area for adsorption However the existence of intraparticle diffusion may lead to the decreases in the adsorption rate and availablecapacity Therefore developing an adsorbent with large surface area and small diffusion resistance hassignificant importance in practical use Clay minerals are good adsorbents for heavy metals because oftheir large surface area and high cation exchange capacity Polymers having numerous functional groupsare also good adsorbents of metal Ions The modification of clays by polymers can improve their physicaland chemical properties In this study poly acrylic acid bentonite nanocomposite was synthesized andcharacterized using XRF XRD FTIR TOC and SEM EDS methods Sorption behavior of thenanocomposite and bentonite for lead under various conditions such as contact time initial leadconcentration temperature and amount of adsorbent was also studied Results showed that the polymerentered into interlayer space of the bentonite and an intercalated nanostructure was formed Maximumpredicted sorption of the Langmuir model for polyacrylic acid bentonite nanocomposite and naturalbentonite were 93 01 and 52 31 mg g respectively Thermodynamic parameters including Gibbs freeenergy changes G0 enthalpy changes H0 and entropy changes S0 showed that lead sorbed by theabsorbent is spontaneous endothermic and favored The kinetic studies of lead sorption at concentrationsof 400 and 800 mg L showed that as the lead concentration increased from 400 to 800 mg L theequilibrium time for the sorption of lead by nanocomposite increased from about 30 to about 60 minutes The equilibrium was not observed however for the sorption of lead by natural bentonite Pseudo secondorder kinetic model was best described the kinetics of lead sorption by the nanocomposite indicatingchemisorption is probably the rate limiting step Kinetic data of lead sorption by bentonite showed thebest fit with a power function model With increasing in the sorbent concentration the amount of leadsorbed per unit weight of the sorbent decreased while the sorption percentage increased In general
