Interval Estimation of Mean Response Time for Single Server Queues Navid Khodadadzade Khaledi n khodadadzadekhaledi@math iut ac ir 04 08 2012 Department of Mathematical Sciences Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Supervisor Dr Amir Naderi amir@cc iut ac ir Keywords Con dence interval Coverage percentage Mean response time Simulation computa tion Fiducial Empirical quantity Bootstrap AbstractIn a queueing system it is important to carry out a statistical analysis When operating a queueingsystem monitoring and control of the performance measures of the system are essential to ensure thatthe system performance is up to design standards These problems often require statistical analysisof performance measures such as tra c intensity mean system size L mean queue size Lq meansojourn time W and mean waiting time Wq of which the statistical behaviors re ect the stabilityof the system The statistical inference in queueing problems are rarely found in the literature andthe work of related problems in the past mainly concentrates on only parametric statistical inference in which the distribution of population is with a known form except perhaps for the parameters The pioneering paper in parameter estimation problem was rst proposed by Clarke who developedmaximum likelihood estimates for the arrival and service parameters of an M M 1 queue Lillieforsexamined the con dence intervals for the M M 1 M Ek 1 and M M 2 queues For a G G 1 queue Basawa and Prabhu studied moment estimates as well as maximum likelihood estimates Maximumlikelihood estimates and con dence intervals in an M M 2 queue with heterogeneous servers werederived by Dave and Shah and Jain and Templeton respectively The con dence interval estimationof a single server queue with random arrivals and balking was investigated by Rubin and Robson Thehypothesis testing and simultaneous con dence intervals of the system parameters for an M Ek 1queue were analyzed by Jain Abou El Ata and Hariri developed point estimation and con denceintervals of the truncated M M 2 N queue with balking and heterogeneous servers Basawa et al used the waiting time data to deal with the maximum likelihood estimation for a single server queue
