Water Quality Zoning of Rivers by the Combination of Fuzzy Clustering Analysis and Principal Component Analysis PCA A Case Study Zayandeh Rud Mehran Rahmatnia m rahmatnia@cv iut ac ir Date of Submission 2012 05 20 Department of Civil Engineering Isfahan university of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Dr Hamid R Safavi hsafavi@cc iut ac ir Dr Azadeh Ahmadi aahmadi@cc iut ac ir AbstractRiver s water quality zoning is considered as the first and the most important steps in managing river s waterquality since it makes it clear for analyst that how pollution changes in different time place and under particularconditions In the present study the implementation of the given management concept in the study area ofZayande Rood River was first built on the basis of a classification algorithm structure which contained differentsections such as problem definition modeling and finally identification of different areas with a variety ofqualities Identifying surface water quality for drinking industrial and agricultural purposes is inevitable therefore the standards specialized for the under study consumption modes are used and the obtained resultshave been investigated By technology progress and development more information has been reachable forhuman under easy condition and in shorter time The surface water related information was analyzed and asummary of results was given to experts for different applications It is essential to set a logical and propercriterion concerning pollution To do so a variety of water quality related parameters are involved regardingpollutants quality and their monitoring purposes Also considering all these parameters simultaneously toanalyze the water quality of a river is difficult and complicated Finally regarding the need to use tools andmodels that are closer to the reality of this issue the analysis of the main components in the classificationalgorithm structure was utilized in order to decrease the number of components under study As a result bydecreasing the information volume resulting in doing less computation the loss of main information wasprevented Regarding the characteristics of fuzzy classification analysis method this method is considered as asufficient and useful technique to identify and analyze rivers pollution and subsequently conclude argue control and decide properly in water quality management The way this method has approached the problem hasbeen investigated in 2 useful aspects The first aspect is abundance and diversity of the data related to riverpollution issues which was always misleading in management decision makings To solve this problem first through the utilization of a Mamdani fuzzy relation the information was fuzzilized فازي سازي and then thecongruence matrix was formed by fuzzy relations The mathematical method classification analysis or groupanalysis along with classifying and calibrating plenty of data opened a way to a clearer view towards the issueand consequently a proper decision making to solve it The second aspect refers to conformity of the toolsbeing used with the reality of issue in nature In this case the fuzzy mathematical science has played its role andtherefore the important characteristic of conformity for the given technique was provided through usingsimilarity matrix stabilization technique and classification dynamic chart formation Finally quality classificationwas performed through specifying the proper threshold limits and the results were investigated The proposedmethod efficiency was evaluated through the quality information collected from water quality monitoring points
