Heavy Metals Removal From Aqueous Solutions Using Green Algae Biomass of Scenedesmus quadricauda Ehsan Moeini feyzabadi e moeini65@yahoo com September 17 2012 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83 111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Noorolah Mirghaffari mnorolah@cc iut ac ir AbstractHeavy metals are considered as the toxic and persistent pollutants in the environment especially in aquaticenvironments that can adversely impact on the ecosystems These elements are found in the water as solubleand insoluble ions organic inorganic complexes or accompanied by colloidal and suspended materials Nowadays there are various techniques for removing heavy metals from water but most of them have thehigh costs of investment operation and maintenance and or low efficiency Adsorption process is one of theeconomic and efficient methods to remove pollutants from aquatic environments In recent years biosorptionusing adsorbents prepared from non living organisms such as bacteria fungi algae and organic materialssuch as rice husks fruit skins leaves bark etc have been taken more attention The purpose of this study isthe removal of cadmium and lead using green algae biomass of Scenedesmus quadricauda In order toprepare the sorbent the biomass of the algae after cultivation and harvesting in vitro was dried andinactivated by Freeze Dryer Adsorption experiments were designed in the both batch and column and theparameters affecting adsorption including equilibrium time initial pH of metal solution initial concentrationof metals and amount of adsorbent were investigated Some physical chemical and morphologicalcharacteristics of sorbent were determined by elemental analysis Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy FTIR and scanning electron microscopy methods The results showed high adsorption rate of cadmium andlead equilibrium time about 15 20 minute Study of adsorption kinetics also represented a better fit to thepseudo second order kinetics for the sorption of cadmium and lead ions by the adsorbent Adsorption ofcadmium and lead was increased with increasing the pH in the range of 2 5 so that the optimum pH for bothmetals adsorption was five Lead and cadmium adsorption were fitted better by Redlich Peterson andLangmuir isotherms models than the Freundlich model Maximum adsorption of cadmium and lead waspredicted 135 and 333 mg g by Langmuir equation respectively With increasing the amount of adsorbentfrom 0 05 to 0 7 g L the adsorption percentage of cadmium and lead at a concentration of 50 mg L wasincreased about 3 5 and 3 folds respectively Column experiments showed that the sorption performance isup to 40 for lead ions amount of adsorption 219 3 mg g and 16 percent for cadmium ions amount ofadsorption 76 mg g and has high ability desorption 90 by nitric acid 0 5M for both metals Hence it ispossible to apply this sorbent in successive adsorption cycles Results of heavy metal adsorption from anindustrial city wastewater sample indicated that cadmium and lead adsorption percentage were 65 and 69 respectively Keywords Heavy metals Microalgae Scenedesmus quadricauda Adsorption Aqueous solutions
