Cranial Morphometrics and Karyotyping of Allactaga firouzi in Isfahan Province Maryam Rahimi Pozve maryam5216715@gmail com Date of Submission September 19 2012 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Mansoureh Malekian mmalekian@cc iut ac irAbstract Allactaga genus belongs to the Allactaginae subfamily Dipodidae family and Rodentia order Iranianmembers of this genus include A elater A euphratica A williamsi A hotsoni A firouzi and A toussi Taxonomic status of this species especially A firouzi is unclear A firouzi is an endemic and rare rodentwhich has been reported exclusively from a single site in the south of Shahreza Isfahan province Due tothe conservation status of A firouzi that had been classified as Critically Endangered in the IUCN 1996and as Data Deficient in the IUCN Red List 2012 therefore more research is required to provideinformation for conservation of this species Previous taxonomic studies that had been mainly based onmorphological characters of the cranial could not separate A firouzi from A hotsoni In the present studytaxsonomic status of A firouzi and A hotsoni was examined using cranial and dental morphometric data Nine Dipodidae specimens from three regions of Isfahan province Mirabad Hanna and Varzaneh werecollected In addition morphometrics data from previous studies were used in analyses All measurementswere recorded on each cranial usinga digital caliper 0 01 mm Dental characters were measured useingMicromeasure 3 3 software Analysis of variance ANOVA discriminant analysis and principalcomponent analysis were performed using SPSS ver 18 The results showed that specimens of Mirabadregion Hanna region and Varzaneh region were A firouzi A williamsi and A hotsoni respectively It is anew report about the presence of A hotsoni in Varzaneh region A firouzi was not separated from A hotsoni based on statistical analyses on cranial and dental characters Therefore this rodent may be apolytypic and might be in fact two subspecies In the second part of this research the karyotype of A williamsi from Hanna region A elater from Izadkhost region and for the first time A firouzi fromShahreza region was obtained and chromosomal characteristics were measured by Micromeasuresoftware Results showed that like other species of Allactaga genus A firouzi has 48 chromosome 2n 48 and the total number of chromosome arms equals to 96 NF 96 This indicates that chromosomenumber has stability in all members of Allactaga genus Cluster analysis based on chromosomalcharacteristics showed that A firouzi and A williamsi have more affinity while in studies of morphometricA firouzi and A elaer were more closely related Accordingly it is possible that further chromosomalstudies may be able to separate A firouzi from A hotsoni and thus reveals the values of this rodent as aunique species for conservation This emphasizes the importance of chromosomal studies in addition tomorphometrics for understanding the taxonomic status of organisms especially members of the Allactagagenus Keywords Allactaga firouzi cranial morphometric dental morphometric karyotype chromosomal characteristics
