Environmental Life Cycle Assessment of Municipal Solid Waste Management System in Isfahan City Mohsen Hasani Hasanimohsen19@yahoo com September 2012 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83 111 IranDegree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisors Dr H Moradi and Dr N Mirghafari and Dr A Salman MahinyAbstractWaste Management Waste products are unavoidable in any society and community is one of themain requirements Hence it is necessary to establish waste management systems The solid wastemanagement system according to the amount and composition of waste there are several ways inaddition to the economic costs the burden on the environment are different A tool for assessingthe environmental impact of waste management there are many different ways but one of the mostcommonly used methods Life Cycle Assessment LCA is The life cycle impact assessmentmethods and different models exist for the evaluation and comparison of different options formanaging waste can be used And the best and most effective option to run both environmentallyand economically was chosen In the present study this approach was used to investigate the statusof Solid Waste Management Isfahan City For this purpose five scenarios include collecting separating and sorting MFR composting landfill unsanitary storage temporary RDF collecting MFR composting and anaerobic digestion incineration plants landfill sanitary andresidual ash landfill collecting MFR waste incineration plants sanitary landfills and residualash landfill with methane gas collecting and energy recovery collecting separation at source at capacity composting sanitary landfill with methane gas collecting and energy recovery collecting MFR direct burial in sanitary landfill with methane gas collecting and energy recovery Required Data Life cycle inventory analysis from Resource assessment and research projects overthe preparation and completion of the questionnaires were collected by field personnel and work The life cycle inventory cataloging was done using the IWM model Then the results The lifecycle inventory cataloging the five categories of energy consumption greenhouse gases acidgases smog and toxic effluent was assigned Lists the values of the characteristic parameters andfinally beat the ecological profile was obtained for each of the scenarios Environmental andeconomic point of view these results indicate that scenario collecting separation at source at capacity composting sanitary landfill with methane gas collecting and energy recovery Asappropriate management options in addition to economic efficiency reduce pollution and energyconsumption plays an important role in waste management systems has caused keywords Environmental Life Cycle Assessment Solid WasteManagement Isfahan City
