Computing r Q Policy for an Inventory System with Limited Sharable Resource Under Continuous Review Reza Sadeghi Rad r sadeghirad@in iut ac ir Date of Submission 2012 09 19 Department of Industrial Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor S H Mirmohammadi h mirmohammadi@cc iut ac ir AbstractOne of the major responsibilities of the industrial units is inventory planning and control Nowadays production service and industrial systems utilize of an inventory management system Many real systems deal with different items For instance the distribution center of a chain storemanages its inventory system for a lot of items Similar modes exist in wholesalers third partylogistics centers as well as department stores Inventory system design has an important effect oncost reduction of firms in order to determine optimal or near optimal value of order quantity andreorder point Inventory systems have constraints as many other systems While the constraintsmake a model more practical they increase the complexity of the model and limit the solutionapproaches of the model This thesis deals with an inventory system under continuous reviewwith multiple items and resource constraint Resource constraint is in fact the budget constraintthat can be spend to purchase items It is a soft constraint that Included in the objective function If consumption of the budget become greater than available budget shortage cost is incurred Customers demand have Poisson discrete distribution and inventory system receive orders afterfixed lead time In the considered model four types of costs are incured ordering cost holdingcost penalty cost for customer backorders and resource shortage cost The goal is to determinethe order quantity and reorder point so that the total system cost is minimized A heuristic methodhave been presented to determine the r Q policy This method consists of two stages The firststage is based on reduction of item s inventory position If the solution is not optimal in first stage a local search is used in the second stage Numerical examples demonstrate that proposed methodreduces total cost more than other methods Computational times of both proposed and existingmethods increases dramatically by increasing problem dimension In order to overcome thisincompetence new method has been presented based on neural network method It is shown thatthis approach is able to obtain ordering policies for large scale problems in a resonable time incomparison with existing methods Keywords r Q policy Resource constraint Stochastic demand Heuristic Algorithm Neural network Continuous review
