The Effect of Merus Ring on Salt Distribution in Soil Column Masoud Karimi Jafari Masoudkarimijafari@gmail com Date of submission September 16 2012 Department of Water Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Behrouz Mostafazadeh Fard behrouz@cc iut ac ir Sayed Farhad Mousavi Mousavi @cc iut ac ir Abstract Due to limitation of water resources with good quality water better use of available water resources and use of recycled water low or medium salinity water for irrigation is important Uncontrolled use of saline water causes a lot of problems including increase of soil salinity The use of Merus ring can control the salt process This study was conducted at the Isfahan University of Technology s greenhouse and the effect of Merus ring on soil salinity distribution and soil salt was investigated for experimental soil columns Two main treatments of with Merus ring RT and without Merus ring T and two sub treatments of irrigation water salinities including 0 67 dS m S1 and 11 7 dS m S2 were used The experiment was performed as a complete randomized block design with three replications Experimental period was 3 months and irrigation was performed every other day To determine soil chemical characteristics soil samples were taken at the middle 45 days after irrigation and end 90 days after irrigation of the irrigation periods at soil depths of 0 30 and 60 cm from surface The results showed that for S2 treatment irrigation with Merus ring decreases soil EC 3 8 and 6 percent for soil depths of 0 30 and 60 cm respectively at the middle of the irrigation period and decreases soil EC 6 79 and 103 percent for soil depths of 0 30 and 60 cm respectively at the end of the irrigation period For S1 treatment and at the middle of the irrigation period soil EC increased at soil depth of 0 and decreased at other soil depths Irrigation with Merus ring and with S2 treatment caused decrease in soil calcium magnesium and sodium at the middle of irrigation period as compared to the irrigation without Merus ring Only magnesium increased at soil depth of 60 cm For irrigation with Merus ring and the end of irrigation period soil magnesium decreased 13 24 and 39 percent and soil sodium decreased 26 47 and 24 percent for soil depths of 0 30 and 60 cm respectively as compared to the treatment of irrigation without Merus ring For irrigation with Merus ring and at the middle of irrigation period the soil SAR decreased 18 percent increased 19 percent and decreased 37 percent for soil depths of 0 30 and 60 cm respectively as compared to the treatment of irrigation without Merus ring At the end of irrigation period The soil SAR decreased 28 27 and 11 percent for soil depths of 0 30 and 60 cm respectively The use of Merus ring caused the soil SAR to increase at soil depth of 30 cm and to decrease at soil depths of 0 and 60 cm at the middle of irrigation period and to decrease at all soil depths at the end of irrigation period The use of Merus ring with saline irrigation water can reduce soil salinity impacts caused by saline irrigation water Under this condition the drainage condition of soil profile becomes important and needs careful consideration Keywords Merus ring Soil salinity Water salinity
