79 The Effects of Zinc Nutrition on Vegetative Growth Characteristics of Almond Rootstock under Saline Conditions Azam Amiri amiriazam23@yahoo com Date of Submission Sep 18 2012 Department of Horticultural Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor B Baninasab bbanin@cc iut ac ir Abstract Soil salinity is one of the major abiotic stresses that adversely affect plant productivity and quality due mainly to excess of Cl and Na ions in plants Zinc deficiency is a common micronutrient deficiency in plants growing in different climatic regions of the world particularly in arid and semi arid regions where alkaline soils predominate It is well know that zinc is an important component of many enzymes a structural stabilizer for proteins and membrane Almond nut trees Prunus amygdalus have been grown commercially in Iran for many years Despite almond has been classified as salt semi tolerant plant Poor quality of irrigation water in association with salt build up soils has reduced the yields of almond over recent years The defense mechanisms zinc in plants against abiotic stress suggest alleviation and amelioration of salt stress in plants A greenhouse pot experiment was therefore conducted to test whether the application of zinc can mitigate the deleterious effects of salt stress on vegetative development in almond rootstock The treatments consisting of NaCl at four levels 0 30 60 and 90 Mm and four doses of zinc 0 5 10 and 20 mgkg 1soil The layout was a 4 4 factorial experiment in a complete randomized design with four replications and three seedlings per each replication The results showed that salt stress decreased vegetative growth parameters shoot length shoot and root fresh and dry weights in almond seedlings Application of zinc ameliorated the adverse effects of injury caused by salt stress and improved vegetative growth parameters Increasing the NaCl concentration caused to increasing leaf ion leakages and proline content in almond rootstock The use of zinc also declined leaf ion leakage and increased proline content compared with the control Salt stress reduced relative leaf chlorophyll chlorophyll fluorescence Fv Fm and photosynthetic capacity on compared with the controls Zinc application improves relative leaf chlorophyll chlorophyll fluorescence and increased photosynthetic capacity compared with the control The NaCl applied caused to accumulating Na in leaves and root and abating K in leaves of the almond seedlings Zinc application at the rate of 10 mgkg 1 soil decreased Na accumulation in leaves and increased K accumulation in leaves and root Zn content of leaf was not influenced by the salt stress However the highest rate of zinc application significantly increased Zn content in leaf and root of almond seedling The results showed significant correlations existed between and among physiological and morphological parameters Therefore it could be concluded that applied of zinc ameliorated the adverse effects of injury caused by salt stress through preventing decrease in relative leaf chlorophyll Fv Fm ratio proline content and photosynthesis and suppressing increase in leaf ion leakage and Na content of the leaves of almond seedling Keywords Almond Zinc Salinity Physiological and morphological parameters Photosynthetic parameters
