Optimization of etching conditions of CR 39 detector Maedeh Zafarzadeh m zafarzadeh@ph iut ac ir Date of Submission 2013 01 06 Department of Physics Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 8415683111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Persian Supervisors Dr Mohammad Hasan Alamatsaz alamatsa@cc iut ac ir Dr Nora Nassiri Mofakham n mofakham@gmail com Abstract Environmental radiation detection and measurement has been in the center of attention since many years ago Solid State Nuclear Track Detection has a special place due to its individual advantages among other techniques Track particle appearance is related to a chemical process which develops latent track This procedure is called detector etching after which track may be seen under an optical microscope Special etching conditions give maximum detection efficiency Some parameters such as concentration and temperature of etchant and the etching time should be obtained which are depended upon characteristic of track forming particle and kind of detector One aim of the present research is to obtain these conditions for CR 39 detector Therefore 241Am alpha particles with energy of 5 48 MeV were detected by CR 39 detector Best etching conditions for these particle tracks were achieved 6 normal aqueous solution of NaOH at 70 Maximum detection efficiency at these conditions was found to be 75 9 after 6 5 hours and by counting number of visible tracks Also the other etching conditions such as effect of stirring thermal variation and instability of concentration should be considered Track geometry has useful information about incident particle which is achieved from track parameters measurement Track depth and track opening diameter are some of these parameters which are related to radiation quantity such as ion mass and energy Also CR39 and TRACK TEST computer programs were used for track simulation and extract track parameters Experimental results were compared with outputs of these programs which showed a good agreement with CR39 code results Also the range of alpha particle was determined with SRIM and MCNPX codes which had a good agreement with each other One of the mains parameters that govern track formation is bulk etch rate Vb Bulk etch rate is depended on different parameters such as etching conditions so some methods for determination of this quantity were valuated and their limitations and conditions were studied Keywords 1 Solid State Nuclear Track Detector 2 SSNTD 3 CR 39 4 chemical etching 5 Alpha particle 6 heavy ion particles
