Determining the Optimum Age of Alfalfa Hay Consumption and Evaluating Physical Form of Starter on Performance of Holstein Dairy Calves Sayed Mohsen Hosseini hoseini mohsen67@yahoo com Date of Submission December 19 2012 Department of Animal Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor M Khorvash khorvash@cc iut ac irAbstractThe present study was conducted to evaluate the optimum age of alfalfa hay consumption and studying ofphysical form of starter on performance and animal behavior of Holstein dairy calves For this purpose fiftyHolstein dairy calves 25 females and 25 males were used in a completely randomized design At age of d 3 calves were randomly allocated to one of the five treatments consisting of control CON calves were fedground barley starter feed without any forage provision and the 3 other treatments consisted of the same starterfeed plus 15 chopped alfalfa hay AH fed at 2nd AH1 4th AH2 and 6th AH3 weeks of age and lasttreatment was starter containing 31 ground barley with 31 whole wheat GBWW Calves received milk intrial fixed and equal to 10 of BW D half in the morning and half in the evening At birth all calves were fedenough amounts of colostrums daily for the first 3 d All calves were weaned 56 d The study finished whencalves reached 73 d old Calves were individually housed and bedded with sand Diets and water were fed adlibitum throughout the trial The starters were formulated to Isonitrogen and Isocalory Ruminal pH ammonia and nutrient digestibility were measured at 4 6 8 and 10 weeks Results indicated that daily starter intake inAH1 was significantly greater in comparison to others and CON The data in pre weaning showed that averagedaily gain for groups that fed alfalfa at 2nd week was significantly greater than other groups but there was nosignificant difference at post weaning period There were no significant differences between treatments for feedefficiency at pre weaning and post weaning periods but there was a significant difference between treatmentsover the entire trail There were significant differences in ruminal pH between 8th and 10th weeks of age for AHtreatments compared CON NH3 concentrations decreased over time and calves fed alfalfa had higherconcentration of NH3 at week 6 than calves fed CON treatment P 0 05 Calves fed AH treatments spendmore time for rumination standing and eating than CON treatment Then effects of replacing ground barleygrain with whole wheat were similar for starter intake average daily gain ADG feed efficiency anddigestibility of neonatal dairy calves Calves fed ground starter had significantly greater pH at 4th week of agecomparison to GBWW but calves fed GBWW had a significantly greater pH at weeks of 8th P 0 05 and 10th P 0 01 In Conclusion results of the current study showed that feeding chopped alfalfa hay at wk 2 to thestarter improve performance and stimulate rumination Key Words Calves Age Alfala Physical form Wheat Performance
