37 Design and Development of a Rotary Soil Bin for Wear Evaluation of Tillage Tool Blades Meisam Rezvani meisam rezvani65@yahoo com January 20 2013 Department College of Agricultural Machinery Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisors A Masoumi masoumi@cc iut ac ir Abstract Wear of tillage tools is one of the major sources of reducing its service life and causes some economicaland operational constraints to farmers Therefor undrestanding and evaluation of the source of thisproblem in agricultural communities is essential for every concerninig countries Most field wearing testshave been found to be expensive and time consuming However laboratory abrasive wear test machinesdeveloped in advanced countries are not available in Iran The objectives of this study were to design anddevelop some equipment for testing the abrasive wear and other studies on soil tillage tools Thedistinguishing characteristic of the equipment is that it allows the tine to keep moving in the soil undercontrolled conditions such as soil moisture and texture The fabricated device consists of support frame inside and outside walls power transmission system and its chassis frame main shaft rotary arms andsoil preparation equipments The outside and inside diameters and the height of the soil bin were 3 5 m 1 9 m and 60 cm respectively The rotary soil bin has four arms fixed to a vertical main shaft The lengthof each arm is 1 5 m with a working radius of 1 34 m approximately and the working speed ranges from0 to 16 rpm The power system consists of a 15 hp three phase electric motor driving a fixeddisplacement hydraulic pump A hydraulic circuit is used to control the device speed manually and afterthat an intermediate sprocket gear box increase torque of main shaft in 2 stages The angular speed isregulated by adjusting the flow rate of the hydraulic oil using a flow control valve Tillage tool travelsaround the angular soil bin followed by a set of inclined levelers which move the soil back to the middleof the working path and for the next pass of the samples a sheep foot and a smooth packer compacts thetop soil and the surface respectively The design criteria included the ease of operation and maintenance safety and cost efficiency The choice of construction materials for the various parts of the equipment wasbased on availability cost and efficiency The general manufacturing processes used in the constructionof the equipment involves marking cutting drilling grinding turning milling welding rolling fastening bending and shaping This new rotary soil bin and its equipment being as the first rotary soilbin in Iran was constructed and mounted at the combustion engine workshop Department of AgriculturalMachinery Engineering of Isfahan University of Technology Key wordsAbrasive tester Hydraulic control system Soil bin Tillage tools wear
