147Calibration and evaluation of the OILCROP SUN model for sunflower on different levels of water application and nitrogen fertilizer Mina Kiani m kiani@ag iut ac ir Date of submission on January 22 2013 Department of Water Engineering College of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Mahdi Gheysari Assistant Professor Gheysari@cc iut ac ir Behrouz Mostafazadeh Fard behrouz@cc iut ac ir AbstractTo achieve the highest WUE and crop yield production the best strategy for water and nitrogen N management in water crisis condition should be considered Although field researches are the mostaccurate methods they are time consuming and costly and their findings are not transferable to otherlocations Thus the crop models functioning more easily as well as faster are applied for efficient andaccurate performance of available water and N fertilizer The objective of this study was to calibrate andevaluate the OILCROP SUN model for Euroflor hybrid of sunflower and to evaluate the performance ofthe model under different levels of irrigation and N fertilizer This study was conducted in 2011 at theIsfahan University of Technology research field in Lavark The experimental treatments included fourlevels of irrigation including two deficit irrigation levels 0 6 SMD soil moisture depletion W1 0 8SMD W2 a full irrigation level 1 SMD W3 and an over irrigation level 1 2 SMD W4 Three Nfertilizer levels including 0 N0 50 N50 and 100 N100 kg N ha were applied The treatments werearranged in a strip plot statistical design with randomized complete blocks with three replications Twocommon hybrids of sunflower in Iran Euroflor and Sirna were planted The timing and amount ofirrigation were determined by daily monitoring of soil moisture in 12 experimental plots at six soil layersby PR2 moisture meter in N50 fertilizer level During the growing season total biomass TB dry weightof head WH stem WS and leaf WL diameter of head DH and stem DS plant height PH andleaf number LN were measured in four stages Harvest parameters included the number of seeds perhead SN seed weight SW seed yield SY percentage of seed oil PO and seed nitrogen SN Using collected field data OILCROP SUN model was calibrated and evaluated for different levels ofwater and N According to volume balance method the Euroflor and Sirna KC for development middle and late stages were found to be 0 75 and 0 72 1 18 and 1 15 0 9 and 0 84 respectively The PH SD HD TB WH WS WL SY oil production and IWUE of seed and oil were affected by irrigation forEuroflor hybrid Also the PH TB WH WL and PO were affected by N fertilizer The optimum level ofirrigation to achieve higher IWUE was W3 treatment The maximum value of SY was occurred forW4N100 The negative impact of increasing N fertilizer was shown on seed and oil production for deficitirrigation levels Genetic coefficients derived from calibration OILCROP SUN model were P1 278 P2 5 P5 693 G2 1000 G3 1 02 and O1 60 for Euroflor hybrid The results indicate the accuracy of thecalibration process was acceptable The model predicted the phenology dates of sunflower such asanthesis date and maturity date exactly The maximum difference percentage between measured andsimulated values at W3N50 was 13 1 percent for SN and at W4N50 was 17 2 percent for SY Theevaluation results showed that SY for 12 treatments with NRMSE value equal to 18 5 and the d indexequal to 0 92 was simulated very well The value of d of the different treatments of water and N for SNwas equal to 0 93 and for oil production per hectare was equal to 0 91 also NRMSE values were equal to20 and 22 respectively These results indicate the possibility of using the model to predict the amountof SN and seed oil under different managements of water applied and N The Kc models based on daysafter planting and thermal time developed for drip tape irrigation system to increase the accuracy of farmirrigation management Also the OILCROP SUN model calibrati
