516 Comparision of FAO UNEP MEDALUS and MICD Models for Mapping Desertification Severity Case Study Jarghoyeh Sofla Region Esfahan Province Mahboubeh Fathi Fathi iut@yahoo com Date of submission January 14 2013 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor S Soltani ssoltani@cc iut ac ir R Jafari Reza jafari@cc iut ac ir AbstractDesertification has been identified as an important global issue by United Nations in 1977and nowadays its deleterious impacts on one billion people over 100 countries has provenas a huge eco social and environmental calamity It is defined as land degradation by oneor combination of wind and water erosion salinization vegetation degradation natural andanthropological factors Although all of above mentioned processes and factors are notnecessary for desertification occurrence in every temporal and spatial scale however thesefactors in particular anthropological factors play substantial role In order to combatdesertification the development of some suitable management models and approaches canhelp to alleviate desertification severity and prevent its extension Therefore knowledge ofdesertification processes intensifying factors and also awareness from weak and strongpoint of these processes is too important to be evaluated In present research three modelsincluding FAO UNEP MEDALUS and MICD were applied to the Jarghuieh Sofla regionin Isfahan Province to map the current status of desertification This study also aimed tocompare the results of the models and suggest the most suitable one in the region First themost important desertification indicators and indices were identified Then the indicatorsand indices were assigned a value based on their effects on desertification in each modeland current desertification status maps were produced Based on MEDALUS model about14 4 and 85 6 of the region were classified as sever III and very sever IV desertification classes Based on the results of MICD model about 7 5 of the area hadmoderate 49 5 high and 43 very high desertification classes Finally in respect toFAO UNEP model about 1 9 0 4 and 97 7 of the study area were categorized innegligible moderate and sever desertification classes respectively According to theresults the MEDALUS model is more advantageous than two others In case of applyingsuitable subjective ideas considering study area conditions and also its GIS basedcharacteristic it can evaluate current desertification status much better than FAO UNEPand MICD models Keywords Desertification Processes Mapping Desertification Severity MEDALUS AndMICD
