67 Biomass Growth and Ethanol Production from Wheat by Mucor hemialis and Modeling of Inhibitory Effect of Glucose and Ethanol on Ethanol Production Farzane Radmanesh f radmanesh@ce iut ac ir 22 January 2013 Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Keikhosro Karimi karimi@cc iut ac ir Akram Zamani zamani akram@cc iut ac ir Abstract Nowadays global warming and environmental concentration increase the necessity of implementation of renewable energy resources These years production of Ethanol as a renewable fuel resource attracts a lot of attention Substrates used for producing bio ethanol divide in to 3 general categories glucose starch and lignocellulosic materials Each country according to the availability of these substrates chooses the most suitable one In Iran great amounts of wheat waste due to different problems The most beneficiary way in order to use these amounts of wheat is by using them in Ethanol production Numerous amounts of yeasts and fungus are using in industry Nowadays different species of Zygomycetes like Mucor are indicated as suitable microorganism for bio ethanol production due to their ability to survive in high temperature and having valuable biomass One of the features of this fungus which are using in industries is their tolerance of high Glucose concentration and Ethanol Also one way to increase the control of bio reactors is checking biomass production So in this investigation the biomass growth rate and inhibitory effect of glucose and ethanol on ethanol production of Mucor hemialis have been studied Hence at first the suspension of 0 25 W V wheat flour was hydrolizated during 2 stages of liquefaction and saccharification This step resulted in 203 3 g l glucose production After that the hydrolyzated was diluted and anaerobic condition was used for producing ethanol by fermentation Results showed that by increasing the glucose concentration from 30 to 70 g l the yield of ethanol production gram produced ethanol per gram of consumed substrate increased from 0 35 to 0 44 and by reaching to the glucose concentration of 120 g l ethanol production decreased Furthermore by increasing glucose concentration the amount of produced biomass decreased In order to stimulation 3 different models of linear Emerson and modified William was used for studying of biomass growth of Mucor hemialis According to the obtained modified William was chosen as the best model By increasing in glucose concentration there was a reduction in obtained R2 Next step an equation for rate of ethanol production according to the inhibitory effect of glucose was extracted Undoubtedly by increasing in glucose the inhibitory effect increased and the inhibitory parameter of the model decreased ks obtained from the curve fitting for Mucor hemialis was 0 61 g l At last the inhibitory effect of ethanol on Yp x was investigated The power of the model resulted from this investigation is near one Keywords Biomass ethanol inhibition Mucor hemialis wheat hydrolizate PDF created with pdfFactory trial version www pdffactory com
