The study of Magnetohydrodynamic MHD behavior of Plasma in Fast Ignition ICF pellets under external magnetic field Hadi Davari h davari@ph iut ac ir h davary@yahoo com January 14 2013 Department of Physics Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor A Parvaziyan parvazin@cc iut ac ir Abstract Fast ignition is a method in inertial confinement fusion ICF In this method irradiation of the target is divided in two steps The first step of irradiation is used to pre compressing the target We use a layer of Copper or Aluminum in a special manner in the target In the second step of irradiation relativistic electron beams will be generated because of interaction between high energy laser s beams and the metal located in the D T fuel target These electrons penetrate in high dense fuel immediately Then energy deposition of these electrons leads to heat of a small area in the target up to 10 keV and finally this process is leading to ignition By using cylindrical pellets and applying an external magnetic field we can focus plasma current in the center of pellet and on cylindrical axis This process leads to reduce heat losses of collisions between plasma particles and pellet walls which finally led to increase gain energy of the target This method is known as Magnetic Target Fusion MTF We have simulated magnetohydrodynamics behavior of the target by using MHDFCT code for two cases First case with applying external magnetic field in order of 5 Tesla and the second case without magnetic field The aims of studying these cases is for understanding the influence of magnetic field in ICF pellets and see the behavior of density temperature and pressure of plasma by using MHD equations Finally in hot spot simulations the relative difference for plasma density and temperature is 19 and 5 percent respectively in the center of hot spot Key words Fast ignition inertial confinement fusion magnetohydrodynamic magnetic target fusion PDF created with pdfFactory trial version www pdffactory com
