Numerical Simulation of Blood Flow in Vessels with Arterial Stenosis Considering Fluid Structure Interaction Mahmood Reza Sadeghi sadeghi@eng ui ac ir Date of Submission 2013 01 17 Department of Mechanical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree Ph D Language Farsi Supervisors Ebrahim Shirani eshirani@cc iut ac ir Seyed Gholamreza Etemad etemad@cc iut ac ir Abstract It is believed that the variations of hemodynamic parameters such as wall shear stresses caused by blood flow and the wall circumferential stresses or strains caused by blood pressure are involved in the formation and progression of vascular diseases such as Atherosclerosis through loading endothelial cells With the initiation and progression of the Atherosclerosis disease the cross sectional area of the artery is reduced arterial stenosis is formed and causes the complexity of the hemodynamic patterns While some studies found a clear correlation between the hemodynamic parameters such as the mean Wall Shear Stress WSS and Oscillatory Shear Index OSI with intimal thickening and the arterial disease initiation there are also some other studies that show no relation between the arterial thickening and the WSS patterns One reason for this difference could be that their main focus has been on the WSS Because some studies have shown that morphological and biochemical simultaneous responses of Endothelial Cells ECs subjected to both shear stress and Wall Circumferential Stress WCS or strain can be different from their responses subjected either by WSS or WCS alone The simultaneous effect of WSS and WCS on the ECs behavior is shown by Stress Phase Angle SPA On the other hand the complexity of hemodynamic patterns may also have an impact on the correlation between hemodynamic parameters So in this thesis the effect of the complexity increase of hemodynamic patterns on the variations of SPA and the correlation between the hemodynamic parameters such as the mean WSS OSI and SPA have been studied numerically The increase of severity numbers of stenoses fluid solid interaction and non Newtonian fluid model have been considered For simulating the transient behavior of blood flow in the arterial system experimental data have been used for the coronary artery In order to obtain the experimental data an experimental system with the ability to simulate conditions close to the physiological blood flow in the arteries has been designed Numerical simulations have been performed using the ADINA 8 2 software Reviewing the obtained results show that any parameter that causes increase in the complexity of hemodynamic patterns can be effective on the hemodynamic parameters correlation such as the mean WSS OSI and the SPA In fact the increase of complexity of the blood flow can lead to the creation of areas with mean WSS more than 1Pa and OSI equal to zero but with large negative SPA which shows that even in these areas there is a possibility for the disease progression Additionally the results show that the growth of each multiple plaques affects on the SPA and can have impact on the stability of the other plaques PDF created with pdfFactory trial version www pdffactory com
