Nonlinear Analysis of Seismic Control of Smart Structures Equipped with MR Dampers Using Optimization Algorithms Mohammd Sadegh Soheilipour ms soheilipour@cv iut ac ir March 16 2013 Civil Engineering Department Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor A M Halabian mahdi@cc iut ac irAbstractIn recent decades increasing the safety and effectiveness of structures against natural hazards such as severeearthquakes using the structural control has attracted the attention of many researchers different types ofstructural control systems in terms of energy requirements and influence on the system are divided in threemajor groups of passive active and semi active Semi active systems combine the best features of bothpassive and active control systems and have a better performance in structural response control They providethe reliability of passive devices and the adaptability of fully active devices Fluid dampers controlled by amagnetic field Magnetorheological Damper is of semi active devices have attracted much attention inrecent years In this research the MR dampers operation and different models to predict the nonlineardynamic behavior of this dampers is described The Bouc Wen model is used to simulate the dynamicbehavior of damper The Performance of MR dampers in the 3 story and 20 story full scale nonlinearbenchmark problem has been evaluated under various excitation These excitations includes various levels offar field and near field records In order to represent the nonlinear behavior a bilinear hysteresis model forstructural member bending is used to model the plastic hinges In this study a Fuzzy Genetic controlalgorithm is used to command the damper In particular a fuzzy logic controller whose rule base determinedby a multi objective genetic algorithm is designed to determine the command voltage of MR dampers tooptimize the displacement acceleration and base shear of structure simultaneously In this study a multi objective optimization method namely Non dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm version II NSGA II isemployed The results show that developed controllers can significantly decrease the peak displacement anddrift of the structure while simultaneously reducing maximum absolute acceleration and maximum baseshear Also it is shown that the controllers proposed in this study can compensate for a change in thestructural parameters due to possible damage in the structure and successfully perform under variousexcitation cases Also it is shown that the controllers proposed in this study can effectively reduce theresponse of the structure during the earthquake excitation Studies have indicated that increasing the inputenergy to the structure and intensity of responses the performance of control system will improve Theresults show that proposed control system is able to have the same or in some cases better performance thanthe active system with far less energy consumption Furthermore in comparison with the passive system operation of MR damper with constant voltage performance of semi active control system is much higherand in some cases the passive system is not able to reduce the response and causes to increase theacceleration and base shear of the structure Key wordsSemi active control system MR dampers Bouc Wen dynamic model Fuzzy controller Multi objectivegenetic algorithm NSGA II
