Effect of irrigation water salinity and soil leaching on corn yield in Dasht Javin city of Sabzevar Mostafa Monjshirini mostafamonji@yahoomail com Date of submission July Department of Water Engineering College of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Behrouz Mostafazadeh Fard behrouz@cc iut ac ir Abstract Salinity of soil and water resources is one of the most important problems which reduces agricultural production and gradually decreases the area under cultivations Salt accumulation in the soil profile is one the major problems in irrigated lands in arid and semi arid regions Irrigation water even with the best quality carries some soluble salts to the soil and increase the soil salinity in most of the cases Salt affected soils are a serious threat to the sustainability of irrigated agriculture Considering the scarcity of water resources for agriculture irrigation with poor quality waters is being increasing One of the effective methods to reduce soil salinity is leaching with proper irrigation management To achieve the objectives of this study a field experiment was conducted during at the city of Sabzevar The experimental design consisted of split split plots on randomized complete blocks for corn plant with three replications for each treatment Treatments consisted of four irrigation water salinities as main plots including and dS m and three leaching requirements as sub plots including and percent The effect of above treatments on yield and yield components of corn and some chemical characteristics of soil in a loam texture soil were investigated The corn variety that was selected for this study was single cross The results showed that the effect of irrigation water salinity on plant elevation plant dry weight leaf area number of rows in ear ear diameter number of grains in ear weight of grains grain yield and harvest index was significant at percent probability level With increase of irrigation water salinity and decrease of leaching soil salinity sodium adsorption ratio and exchangeable sodium percent of soil increased and these increases are greater for soil depth of cm as compared to soil depths of and cm The increase of irrigation water salinity and leaching level increase soil pH and soil pH was greater at the lower soil layer as compared to the top layer but the differences were not significant But plant elevation dry weight leaf area number of rows in ear ear diameter number of grains in ear weight of grains grain yield and harvest index decreased Effect of leaching on plant elevation dry weight leaf area number of rows in ear ear diameter number of grains in ear weight of grains grain yield and harvest index was significant at percent probability level With use of leaching plant elevation plant dry weight leaf area number of rows in ear ear diameter number of grains in ear weight of grains grain yield and harvest index increased Interaction effect of irrigation water salinity and leaching on plant elevation leaf area number of rows inPDF created with pdfFactory trial version www pdffactory com
