78 Effect of Entomopathogenic Nematodes Steinernema feltiae S carpocapsae and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora on the Control of Onion Thrips Thrips tabaci Thysanoptera Thripidae Marzieh Kashkouli m kashkoli@ag iut ac ir 18 September 2013 Department of Plant Protection College of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree MSc Language FarsiSupervisors Jahangir Khajehali Assist Prof khajeali@cc iut ac ir Nafiseh Poorjavad Assist Prof npoorjavad@cc iut ac irAbstractConsidering the importance of biological control of the onion thrips Thrips tabaci Thysanoptera Thripidae the potential of entomopathogenic nematodes EPNs against soil dwelling life stages of the pestand the combination of EPNs with 1 different host plants of T tabaci and 2 thrips pre treatment withinsecticides were studied under laboratory and semi field conditions In the laboratory experiment the EPNswere included a native isolate of Steinernema feltiae T1 and three commercial strains S feltiae S carpocapsae Rhabditida Steinernematidae and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora Rhabditidae Heterorhabditidae The pathogenicity of EPNs were tested at concentrations of 400 and 1000 infectivejuveniles IJs cm 2 against the second instar larvae L2 prepupae and pupae of the thrips This was followedwith trials compared efficacy of S carpocapsae at concentrations of 400 and 1000 IJs cm 2 on the thrips fedon different host plants i e onion shoots Allium cepa L pods of green beans Phaseolus vulgaris L andcucumber fruits Cucumis sativus L Also the effect of insect pre treatment with insecticides i e imidaclopride deltametrin and abamectin on S carpocapsae and H bacteriophora pathogenicity atconcentrations of 400 and 1000 IJs cm 2 against the thrips larvae was studied in the laboratory In the semi field experiments effect of two EPNs S carpocapsae and H bacteriophora at concentrations of 104 and2 104 IJs ml 1 against onion thrips larvae was tested The results indicated that thrips stages concentrations EPN species strains caused significant differences in terms of efficacy against the onion thrips The highestonion thrips mortality was recorded for prepupal 92 and pupal 92 59 stages at 1000 IJs cm 2 by S feltiae T1 and S carpocapsae respectively However the commercial strain of S feltiae at 400 IJs cm 2caused the lowest rate of pathogenicity against larval stage In these experiments increasing concentrationsof selected EPN species strains led to an increase in thrips mortality and prepupal and pupal stages weremore sensitive to EPNs Among different host plants green bean with 41 63 mortality at 1000 IJs cm 2induced significantly higher mortality by S carpocapsae against the onion thrips than other plants S carpocapsae H bacteriophora and different insecticides interact synergistically and antagonistically on themortality of L2 respectively In these experiments imidaclopride pre treatment induced the highest mortality 53 87 by S carpocapsae at 1000 IJs cm 2 and the lowest mortality by H bacteriophora 9 56 at 400IJs cm 2 against thrips larval stage No significant differences were detected by application of differenttreatments in the semi field experiment Keywords Onion thrips Entomopathogenic nematodes Biological control Thrips life stages Hostplants insecticides
