Effect of Rosmarinus officinalis extract on growth performance and immune system function of juvenile Beluga Huso huso Mojtaba Haghjou Jahromi m haghjo68@yahoo com Date of submission 2013 09 10 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc language Farsi Supervisor Dr Eisa Ebrahimi e ebrahimi@cc iut ac ir Abstract Fish culture is one of the most important and fast growing part of aquaculture Nowdays due to intensive farming infectious disease developed and become of the major problem in the aquaculture industries and lead to economic losses High sensitivity and rapid spread of fish diseases makes aquaculturists to concentrate their activities avoidance infectious disease Some efforts such as sanitary precautions disinfection and pharmacotherapy especially has with antibiotics was performed to control disease Commercial use of antibiotics and other drugs in fish farming severely been criticized because of bacterial resistance environmental pollution and their bioaccumulation in fish s body In recent years much attention has been paid to the immune system stimulator immune system Stimulators are biological or artificial extracts that trigger the body s immune response and growth Rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis is one of the spices that have high antioxidant properties Rosemary oil is used as antibacterial and antifungal material properties antioxidant antimicrobial and anticancer This study was accomplished to investigate the immunological effects of rosemary herb Rosmarinus officinalis extract in juvenile Beluga Huso huso In order to determine immunological effects of rosemary extract some immuno haemotological parameters and serum metabolic products cholesterol glucose total protein and etc were examined Six groups three replicate group of 126 fish with initial mean body weight of 130 94 5 28g were feed with diets containing 0 control 0 1 1 10 and 20g kg of rosemary extract and a group of oxytetracyclin 30 mg kg Significant improvements of the immune system and of the physiological condition were observed in juvenile beluga fed with rosemary feed supplemented Total protein glucose GOT GPT Glycogen Haemoglobin Glubolin and Albumin were elevated significantly p 0 05 in the groups fed on rosemary The results showed no significant differences in growth parameters between the different treatments In conclusion it can be suggested that addition of rosemary can improve haematological parameters of juvenile beluga Huso huso Rosemary extract can therefore be used as a sutible replacement for oxytetracycline in the diet of juvenile beluga Keywords Huso huso Growth performance Haematological parameters Rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis PDF created with pdfFactory trial version www pdffactory com
