Investigation of transport of relativistic electrons and protons in fast ignition fusion using MCNP code Majid Sangsefidi m sangsefidi@ph iut ac ir 17 4 2013 Department of Physics Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Dr Seyedzafarollah Kalantari zafar@cc iut ac irAbstractInertial Confinement Fusion is a method to perform fusion reactions to power produc tion purposes Recently fast ignition has been suggested to transmission and dipositionenergy to the fuel In Fast Ignition energy deposition to the fuel is performed intwo phases At first pellet is exposed with ultra intense driver beams wich is causeda primery compression of the fuel but the fuel doesn t ignite In the second phaseand after a time interval of order of pico second an ultra intense pulse of relativisticelectrons or protons of order of cm is radiated from a side to the target Wand increase temperature of this point hot spot much enough that the fuel in this pointignite and the fusion reactions are In this thesis spherical pellets of D T fuel are investigated for the Fast Ignition indifferent R parameters have consider relativistic electrons and protons as driverpulses wich are generated from collision of ultra intense laser with a thin plate ofAluminum that has been inserted in a golden cone in the pellet this method calls LaserInduced Particle To simulate this mechanism we use the MCNP code to calculatethe energy deposition and flux of driven pulses in the pellet s cells We showed thatwhen we increase the R parameter the energy deposition in first layers increased We have shown that the deposit energy of electrons to the fuel increases by increasing R parameter However for 1MeV electrons in R ۶ cm the deposit energy gapproaches asymptotically to a constant value Because production of high Rparameter is difficult the optimum value of R parameter should be determined So the deposit energy for 1MeV electrons in R ۶ cm is the optimum value gOur calculations shows that the energy absorbance coefficient of D T fuel for 1MeVelectrons is a and fuel gain and gain of pellet are 68 and 12 respectively These calculations perform for electrons in the range Ee MeV We haveshown that the 1MeV electrons have the best deposit energy for R ۶ cm thegsimulations repeated for proton beams in different R parameter It is shown thatthe optimum value of R and kinetic energy of protons are ۶ cm and 20MeV grespectively Comparison between energy deposition of electrons and protons in sameenergies shows that energy deposition of protons is more than electrons Keywords
