53 Effects of Different Treatments on Dormancy Breaking and Germination of Pomegranate Seeds Mohammad Naser Taheri mn taheri@ag iut ac ir 25 Dec 2013 Department of Horticultural Science Isfahan University of Technology 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisors Mahdiyeh Gholami Bahram Baninasab mah gholami@cc iut ac ir AbstractSeed germination is an important step in the breeding programs Pomegranate Punicagranatum L seeds had low and irregular germination and stand establishment The efficacy ofdifferent seed treatments on the germination and emergence of pomegranate seeds wasinvestigated The seeds were soaked for 24 and 48 h at 25 C in the dark in distilled water hydro priming 1 and 3 KNO3 halo priming and 0 4 and 0 8 MPa PEG osmo priming incubated in moist sand at 4 C for 30 and 45 days stratification or immersed in 70 sulphuricacid for 10 and 20 min scarification After treating the seeds were washed with distilled waterand sown Parameters such as final germination percentage germination rate mean germinationtime radicle length plumule lenght plumule fresh and dry weight vigour index andgermination index were measured Restults showed that all treatments significantly increasedseedling vigour index as compared to control The results from seedling emergence tests showedthat stratification of seeds for 30 days and seed priming in KNO3 1 increased seedlingemergence Stratification for 30 days Hydro priming for 24 h KNO31 priming and acidscarification with H2SO4 for 10 min had positive effects on germination index under both Petridish and soil conditions Pretreated seeds of pomegranate failed to germinate properly whenprimed by 0 8 MPa PEG or treated with acid for 20 min In conclusion priming can be used toincrease pomegranate emergence percentage and rate to ensure production of well developed uniform seedlings Keywords Germination Petridish Planting tray Pomegranate Punica granatume L Priming
