Javad Meshkatifar j meshkatifar@me iut ac ir January 5 2014 Department of Mechanical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Dr M Esfahanian mesf1964@cc iut ac ir Abstract The class A vehicles are widely considered nowadays in order to improve energy efficiency and reduce air pollution By investigating the domestic car market and needs of the community the need to produce and deliver a car with the national class A platform is recognize In this study to meet these needs the codification process of the basic platform of national class A vehicle has been started to help developing the final product via conducting various extensive design projects In fact the basic platform is the basis for defining subprojects in different areas of the design process In the present study design analysis and optimization of dynamics subsystems is specifically attended to based on the basic platform that is specified for this car The front and rear suspension systems along with steering system are designed and analyzed from the mechanism perspective By investigating similar car designs the Macpherson strut mechanism is used for front suspension system and twist beam mechanism is selected for the rear suspension system In this stage after analyzing the design of suspension system from vibration and mechanism point of view its optimization for ride quality and mechanism geometry including roll center height and key parameters related to wheel alignment and steer axis geometry are performed Also by selecting rack and pinion mechanism for the vehicle steering system design optimization has been done for steering geometry of wheels behavior of the steering mechanism in roll steer phenomenon and other details It is worth noting in the electric powertrain type of this platform significant weight increase and change in the position of the center of mass occurs compared to ICE powertrain type Necessary measures have been taken for modifying the dynamic behaviour of vehicle with minimal changes in the dynamical subsystems and with the approach of maintaining a common platform In this project CATIA ADAMS Car and ADAMS Insight software are widely used CATIA has been used in the field of CAD Also dynamical modelling of this car is done in ADAMS Car The design execution and analysis of the experiments along with cost functions modelling and optimization are performed in the ADAMS Insight software By using ADAMS Car different tests such as suspension travel steering four post with random road profile constant radius cornering lane change etc are simulated Also optimization process is performed by different approaches such as ride and handling using full factorial DOE and formation of response surface in ADAMS Insight linked with ADAMS Car Integration of design analysis and optimization processes in the field of vehicle dynamics can be considered as one of the innovations of the presented study In the domestic car market none of the three national brands own a native class A platform in their products Therefore this research and its implementation has great importance for having a class A platform in domestic products In addition technical know that is achieved in this study would be valuable for designing class A dynamic subsystems The created model in the ADAMS Car software can be used for future design stages of this platform Key Words Class A vehicle Vehicle platform Concept design Vehicle dynamics Suspension system Steering system
