Study and evalution of thermal spray coating using composite Stellite6 WC powder by HVOF technique Mehdi Ahmadi Eshkaftaki Mehdi ahmadi2010@gmail com January 2014 Department of Materials Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor M Atapour Assis Prof m atapour@cc iut ac ir H Edris Prof h edris@cc iut ac irAbstract In this study high velocity oxygen fuel HVOF process was applied to create a compositecoating on the surface of carbon steel samples The effect of WC addition on properties ofHVOF sprayed Stellite6 WC coatings was investigated For this various amounts of WCpowder 0 10 20 and 30 were mixed with Stellite6 powder for 1 hours Thenpowders deposited on St 37 steel substrate with HVOF method Evaluation ofmicrostructure and properties of obtained composite coatings was done by X raydiffraction XRD optical and scanning electron microscope SEM elementalmicroanalysis EDS and microhardness testing methods Vickers micro hardness test wasused to evaluate the hardness of coatings Cyclic oxidation test in 350 450 and 550 for30 hours were performed to probe the oxidation resistance of coatings Also the pin on disk test with 40N load and 1000 m sliding distans at 25 was used to cold wearresistance assessment of coatings The rsults indicated that the Stellite6 30 WC exhibitsmaximum wear resistance Further more the Stellite6 coating exhibited high prosity 2 but Stellite6 30 WC has the lowest prosity of all High temperature oxidation testindicated that Stellite6 exhibits the best behaviour incomparision to other samples According to wear experiments the dominant wear mechanism was abrasive and adhesivefor Stellite6 and Stellite6 WC composit coatings respectively Keywords Stellite6 WC composite HVOF process high temperature oxidation wear
