121Investigation and Production of Alumina Monolithic Refractory containing in situ nano spinel Saeed Zare s zare@ma iut ac ir Date of Submission January 7 2014 Materials Engineering Department Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisors A Monshi Prof Supervisor a monshi@cc iut ac irA Saidi Prof Supervisor a saidi@cc iut ac irAbstractIn recent decades the monolithic refractory is attracted due to the no requirement to anytreatment for shaping and sintering Tendency to use Alumina magnesia spinel phase hasincreased due to favorable properties such as improved mechanical properties and slagcorrosion resistance Recently by attention to the effect of fine grain size materials on theproperties of refractory castables and by employment of nano technology in materialengineering widespread researches has begun about using nano particles for refractorycastables In this study production of alumina monolithic refractory containing in situ nanospinel was considered In situ nano spinel formation at higher temperatures helps tocounterbalance the volume expansion Different parameters such as the kind and amount ofraw materials and aggregates suitable binder at different firing temperatures wereconsidered and bulk density BD apparent porosity AP strength was measured andXRD and SEM consideration were performed Results showed that by using suitableamounts of alumina with magnesia at 110 C and firing at 1300 C in situ nano spinel isformed in the castable Therefore in this research to acquire the suitable bindersreplacement for calcium alumina cement different combinations of Sulphate binders phosphate binders and silicate binder were considered Result of the Brazilian strength testshowed hexameta phosphate binder with calcium sulfate binder and white cement makinga strong bond beside hydraulic and ceramic bonds Studies by SEM and XRD showed useof refractory clay and lime glass phase and mullite is produced Mullite together with insitu nano spinel increase the strength and other properties of castable Aggregates ofIranian sieved bauxite has developed good properties Key words Monolithic Refractory Castable In Situ nano spinel Binder Bauxite CalciumAluminate cement Alumina Magnesia
