Method of flow distribution management in systems based on OpenFlow Mahshid Salehi Mahshid salehi@ec iut ac ir 12 21 2013 Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Persian Masoud Reza Hashemi hashemim@cc iut ac irAbstractThe current architecture of data center networks is a combination of Ethernet switches androuters However this architecture cannot satisfy the requirements of these networks Themost important reason is that L3 routers create overhead and configuration errorssignificantly So researchers are looking for ways that has both layer two and layer threeadvantages while avoiding their shortcomings Since hosts have Ethernet hardware theproposed method should be compatible with Ethernet SDN is a newly proposed network architecture that allows implementation of newprotocols OpenFlow is a famous SDN protocol used mostly for the implementation ofSDN architectures In this architecture the manager easily adjusts his intended policiesmerely on a controller traffic engineering and quality of service can be carried out quitewell new features can easily be added to the controller In this architecture Ethernet canbe replaced by new methods Then the overhead resulting from Ethernet broadcast topological limitations and routing limitations can be avoided But the control overhead ofthis method is high One way to reduce the control overhead by separating big and smallflows and letting the controller to control only the big flows ECMP routing is a methodthat can be used for routing small flows However OpenFlow does not support ECMP Inthis thesis a new method based on OpenFlow is proposed to replace ECMP The proposedmethod can achieve performance comparable to ECMP Key WordsNetwork Data center Ethernet SDN OpenFlow ECMP
