Performance of scrap iron in reducing organic load of leachate generated in composting process using electro Fenton method Golnoosh khajoei g khajoei@cv iut ac ir Departement of Civil Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Lnguage FarsiHasti Hasheminejad H hasheminejad@cc iut ac irAmir Taebi amirth@cc iut ac irAbstractSolid waste management is becoming a global problem in developed countries In recent years theinternational policy on management of organic wastes has been increasing directed toward recycling Thereare different technologies to recycle organic waste and composting as a low technologies and low investmentprocess to convert organic waste to an organic fertilizer has gained an increasing interest in management oforganics wastes Composting convert organic waste materials into an organic fertilizer used in gardens parks and other green areas Additionally it has a wide application as a solid conditioner for barren areas One of the main problems associated with the treatment of organic wastes in compostiong facilities is themanagement and treatment of leachates wich present a high organic load and cannot be stored in the plant Compost leachate is comprised of the run off of liquids through active compost in the course of thecomposting process Untreated leachate leads to serious environmental problems Although some of thispollution can be degraded by microorganism the restriction of common biological process makes it difficultto get to the standards of discharge In this case more advanced techniques based on physicochemicalprocesses must be used to degrade these compounds Among various physicochemical processes advancedoxidation processes AOPs have been widely applied to enhance the bio treatability of wastewatercontaining different organic compounds that are non biodegradable and or toxic to microorganism Fentonbased are promising methods among advanced oxidation process that have been applied in treatment of bio refractory compounds Hydroxyl radicals being one of the strongest oxidants E 2 73V are the mainoxidizing species in the Fenton process The main purpose of this research is evaluation of electro Fentonusing scrap iron in reduction of COD for leachate from composting process In order to optimize the process primary eperiments have been done with the concentration of H2O2 initial pH electrical current and theamount of iron added from outside of reactor as the main parameters of process and COD reduction wasconsidered as the response At this stage all experiments were conducted within 60 minutes All theexperiments were conducted in batch mode At the next stage by exerting the optimal conditions onprocesses the effect of time on processes and kinetics of reactions were investigated It is necessary tomention that factor of iron scrap was omitted because of being inactive during the process After peimaryexperiments the main experiments were done Response Surface Methodology RSM was used for design ofexperiment The result from analysis of variance revealed that all the parameters except time were staticallysignificant More than 50 of COD removal was achieved under optimal conditions for electro Fenton 78
