Synthesis of Alumina Silica and Bentonite Aerogels using Supercritical Technology and Feasibility Study of Using them in Bioethanol Conversion Reaction Mostafa Safarzadeh m safarzadeh@ch iut ac ir Department of Chemistry Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiProf Hassan S GhaziaskarAbstractAerogels are one of the highly applicable materials having very high surface area Beside of high surface area these material heve some attractive specification suchas very low density Fribility flexibity and dimensional stability are some ofimportant parmeters of mechanical properties of Aerogels With respect to thesespecifications Aerogels have many industrial application puroposes Aerogel areproduced via sol gel process and one step of special drying in addition In thisthesis three types of Alumina Silica and Bentonite Arogels have been produced byusing of supercritical technology Produced Aerogels structures have been studiedby FT IR method Sufrace area of these Aerogels has been examined via BETmethod BET test results showed that the highest surface area is belongs tocorresponding Alumina Aerogel Surface area of this aerogel was obtained at277 211 m2 g As one of their application these Aerogels have been deployed forcatalyst basis for bioethanol conversion reaction Among the produced catalysts theNickel loaded catalyst which consists 8 w w of Nickel on Alumina Aerogels hasbeen showed the best performance Qulitative measurments showed that majorproducts of reaction are 1 Butanol Diethylether and 1 Hexanol Obtained yields for1 Butanol Diethylether and 1 Hexanol was 25 5 0 2 8 6 0 88 and 5 5 0 11 respectively for this catalyst Studies showed that the optimum tempreturewas 250 C and pressure was 141 bars Key Words Aerogel Sol Gel SuperCritical State 1 Butanol
