Effects of Blood Glucose Levels on the Optical Response of Human Finger Rooben Minassian r minasian@ec iut ac ir Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Supervisors Dr Maryam Zekri mzekri@cc iut ac ir Abstract Diabetes is a result of metabolic disorders of no or too little insulin production by the pancreas Blood glucose level can exit the normal range as a result of this condition According to the World Health Organization 180 million people are suffering the Diabetes worldwide This number is expected to rise to more than 350 million by 2030 Nowadays there is no ultimate cure for the Diabetes and the patients have to control and manage this disease in order to avoid its consequences Such a control can be achieved through a control system The goal of this control system is to keep the blood glucose level in the desired level The most important feature of the glucose control system is the measurement of its output which is the blood glucose level Controlling the Diabetes without the knowledge of blood glucose level is like driving a car with closed eyes Many devices are available for measuring the blood glucose level All current devices are invasive They require a drop of blood which is collected through a painful and tedious action The body tissue needs to be penetrated considering the hygienic consideration of this process it can be very costly in the long run So far several efforts have been done to develop non invasive optical methods in the RNIR region to measure blood glucose level The low absorption coefficient of glucose molecules and the weak signals produced by them have turned this effort into a total failure Another approach has used the light scattering feature of glucose molecules However for effective execution of this method other auxiliary parameters must be employed to intensify the minor effect of glucose molecules on the light This thesis analyzes and simulates the influence of glucose on scattering coefficient of transmitted light and its other coefficients in the biological tissue using the Mie theory and WKB estimation Since parameters suggested previously have low sensitivity to glucose here by introducing new parameters MGSP and S and reiterating the simulation an increased sensitivity of that parameters are observed A Calibration diagram for determining the glucose level is the outcome of these experiments Further explanation for the development of the prototype is included in this thesis report Key words Light scattering Glucose level WKB approximation Mie
