New Approaches In Inertial Confinement Fusion Fast ignition and Shock Ignition Saeed Davari Saeed davari@ph iut ac ir Date of Submission January 18 2014 Department of Physics Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Degree M Sc language Persian Supervisor A Parvazian Abstract Fusion by Inertial Confinement Fusion ICF can be performed in different approaches including central ignition fast ignition and shock ignition Since central ignition havemuch instability it can not produce high gain Instead fast ignition and shock ignition are proposed In these approaches instability isreduced by defining two phases compression and ignition In fast ignition the beams of energetic particles driving the ignition process are causedby irradiation Pettawatt Laser Proton beams are the best choice for this process Thetransport of these particles in burning target is done by MCNPX Following this transport hot spot formation occurs at the center of the target In this project we have studied fastignition in cylindrical and spherical targets Shock ignition is the most recent method used in ICF This method is called anintermediate approach because it is a combination of the other two approach Thisintermediate approach has borrowed simple structure of target from central ignition andprocess phases from fast ignition In this approach we use two general and conceptualbases including the increase of pressure caused by convergence of waves into the targetand the collision of two shocks The physics of this process and the determiningparameters of this approach have defined and the gain of this approach are finally analyzedby governing relations in ICF analyzed finally This analysis shows that it is possible tohave a magnitude of 80 for the gain in shock ignition while gain in central ignition canhave a maximum value of about 30 Keywords fusion inertial confinement central ignition fast ignition particletransport shock ignition gain
