111 Research on the problems of stability of building excavations in urban areas Tahereh Kariminia t kariminia@cv iut ac ir Department of Civil Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiMahmoud Vafaeian mahmood@cc iut ac irMohammadali Rowshanzamir mohamali@cc iut ac irAbstractBuilding excavation failures reported in recent years indicate that further study is needed to improve designingand constructing of lateral support systems for such excavations In fact one of important issues in civilengineering is to stabilize vertical or sloped sidewalls of excavations in urban projects Since the geotechnicalcharacteristics of the site are the most important and effective factor sin selecting and designing of deep systemstabilization making accurate and appropriate geotechnical studies prior to selecting design and operation ofdeep stabilization would have a significant role on the rational progress and engineering design procedures aswell as performance of braced excavations In this research by considering cases of stable and unstableconstructed excavation it was found that most of the failures occurring in building excavations are due to lackof appropriate arrangements for the retaining walls and or inappropriate performing of the retaining systems Inaccurate estimation of geotechnical parameters of the soil leads to wrong engineering judgment on manyprojects Thus a comparison has been made between the limit equilibrium analyzes of lateral pressure deepretaining systems with Finite Element analysis through PLAXIS2D8 5 software The comparison results showthat similar to limit equilibrium analyzes the software analyses also accomplish based on the rotation ofretaining system and formation of active and passive areas Moreover comparisons were made between thedistribution of the driving pressures on the excavation support system in two different cases of full depth as wellas partial retaining of excavations The comparison results indicated that in the cohesive soils retaining systemmaybe performed lower than the deep stability depth Finally parametric studies were made on three casehistories to evaluate the accuracy of their design and performance Keywords Excavation Retaining system Limit Equilibrium PLAXIS Analysis
