Application of Geomicrobiology in Mineral Exploration Case Study Tapehsorkh Irankouh Naser Amini Zad Kovij n amini@mi iut ac ir Date of Submission 2013 01 Department of Mining Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Ahmadreza Mokhtari ar mokhtari@cc iut ac ir Supervisor Mortaza Tabaei mtabaei@cc iut ac ir Abstract Mineral deposits characterized by outcropping hard rock mineralization are well exploredand currently being depleted Consequently mineral exploration is increasingly focusing onareas where thick layers of overburden conceal potential mineralization Critical to thedevelopment of successful predictive exploration techniques in these areas is anunderstanding of processes that lead to trace element dispersion and re concentration andthus mediate the formation of surface and near surface expression of buried mineralization To generate an understanding of the relationship between microorganisms theirgeochemical environment and processes relevant to mineral exploration explorationgeomicrobiology has emerged as a new area of research The primary purpose of this study was to survey the possible relationship between soilbacterial populations with mineral deposit occurrence underground in order to find abiogeochemical index in mineral exploration Irankouh Pb Zn mining area was selected asthe sampling site In this study firstly modeling of small Tapehsorkh mineralization was completed byemploying core drills results and then soil sampling transects were selected All soil sampleswere collected from 10 30 cm depth to avoid surface contamination and rock samples fromnon weathered rock The samples were divided into two parts for chemical and microbialanalyses Geochemical samples were prepared and total metal analyzed using inductivelycoupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy ICP OES Bacterial count of the totalpopulation microbial respiration and soil chemical characteristics such as pH and electricalconductivity were measured in all samples The results of the counting of soil bacteria wereshowed a class of bacterial colonies colored in red corresponding to position ofmineralization underneath Statistical analyses were carried out on the chemical analysis ofthe soil samples Amongst the methods SDD semi discrete decomposition technique wassuccessfully identified the mineralized zone By comparing the results of chemical analysisand biological methods it can be concluded that the microbial analyses could be used as acomplementary method in exploration of hidden deposits Keywords microorganism metabolism geomicrobiology bacterial colony Tapehsorkh
