74 Microwave Filter Synthesis by Using Inverse Scattering Techniques Elahe Marzban e marzban@ec iut ac ir Date of Submission 2014 05 9 Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering IsfahanUniversity of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisors Amir Borji aborji@sharif edu Abolghasem Zeidaabdi Nezhad zeidabad@cc iut ac irAbstract Filters play important roles in many RF microwave applications They are used toseparate or combine different frequencies The electromagnetic spectrum is limited and has to beshared filters are used to select or confine the RF microwave signals within assigned spectrallimits A wide variety of microwave filter design techniques are available in differenttechnologies using different basic microwave structures and topologies such as Insertion loss orRichard method In any case conventional microwave filters obtained by exact synthesis ordirectly by the Insertion loss method will be implemented by cascading suitable microwavestructures and will include sharp discontinuities at the connection junctions These sharpdiscontinuities can be troublesome In this research a technique to synthesize microwave filtersby inverse scattering assuming single mode operation is proposed This synthesis technique isvery flexible and is valid for causal passive and stable frequency responses The Coupled modetheory is used to model microwave propagation along the filter and therefore the synthesistechnique is applicable to filters implemented in a wide range of technologies such as planar andnonplanar transmission lines and many waveguides The synthesis method is exact for all thefrequency range of interest preventing the degradation of the frequency response The resultingsynthesized filter is in general a nonuniform transmission line or waveguide that features acontinuously varying smooth profile avoiding the presence of sharp discontinuities and theirdetrimental effects Keywords Microwave filter Coupled mode theory Inverse scattering Coupling coefficient Frequency response
