122 Effects of Arbuscul Mycorrhiza and Piriformospora indica Fungi on Some Morphological and Physiological Characteristics of Two Wheat Genotypes Under Phosphorus Deficiency Davod Rahmani Iranshahi da8512043@gmail com January 20 2014 Department of Soil Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiMojgan Sepehri E mail msepehri@cc iut ac irAmirhosein Khoshgoftarmanesh E mail amirhkhosh@cc iut ac irAbstractPhosphorus P deficiency is one of important abiotic stresses resulted in crop yield reduction in mostagricultural lands worldwide Therefore finding effective approaches to increase plant tolerance to Pdeficiency is of great importance Mycorrhizal fungi inoculation of plant roots can be applied as aneffective strategy for reducing detrimental effects of phosphorus deficiency This study was conducted ingreenhouse of Soilless Culture Research Center Isfahan University of Technology to investigate theinfluence of individual and combined inoculation of endophytic fungus Piriformospora indica andmycorrhizal fungi Glomus mossea and Glomus intraradices on some morphological and physiologicalproperties of two wheat cultivars Triticum aestivum cv Azadi and Nicknejad in response to phosphorusdeficiency stress Wheat plants were grown in pots containing a mixture of sterile sand perlite 2 1 v v and exposed to two levels of P 64 and 32 mg l The results showed that shoot iron Fe and Pconcentrations the rate of leaf photosynthesis and root and shoot dry mass of both wheat cultivarsdecreased under P deficiency conditions In contrast P deficiency increased shoot zinc Zn concentration total chlorophyll content and activity of catalase CAT and ascorbate peroxidase APX No significant differences were found between two wheat cultivars in terms of shoot dry mass P and Znuptake activity of CAT and APX and stress tolerance index under P deficiency conditions Inoculation ofplants root with mycorrhizal fungi and P indica resulted in higher crop tolerance to P deficiency byincreasing activity of antioxidant enzymes stimulating the photosynthesis rate and enhancing P uptake bythe root The response of the wheat cultivars to mycorrhizal inoculation was different and the positiveeffect of the studied fungi inoculations on growth and tolerance to P deficiency of Azadi cultivar wasgreater than Nicknejad cultivar The most effective fungal treatments for improvement of P concentrationof wheat cultivars were individual inoculation of P indica and simultaneous inoculation of P indica andG Mossea in Azadi and Nicknejad cultivars respectively Based on the obtained results the mosteffective fungal treatment for increasing the shoot and root dry mass of the studied wheat cultivars underP deficiency were simultaneous inoculation of P indica and G intraradices The most effective treatmentto increase antioxidant enzymes activities of Azadi cultivar was individual inoculation of G intraradices The best microbial treatments in increasing enzyme activity of CAT APX and guaiacol peroxidase GPX of Nicknejad cultivar was belonged to simultaneous inoculation of P indica and G mossaea individual inoculation of G mossea and co inoculation of P indica and G intraradices The results alsoshowed that the studied fungi can improve wheat tolerance to P deficiency stress by enhancing nutrientuptake by the root improving root and shoot plant growth increasing activity of antioxidant enzymes andstimulating the photosynthesis rate It should be mentioned that the effect of the studied fungi on wheatcultivars and their antioxidant response to P deficiency was different Although fungi treatments can beused to increase wheat tolerance to P deficiency but different responses of the cultivars to fungitreatments should be investigated Keywords Phosphorus deficiency Mycorrhizal fungi Antioxidant enzymes Piriformospora indica
