Theoretical and Experimental study of Valence Photoelectron Spectroscopy of Purines and Amino acids and Two Dimensional Optogalvanic Spectroscopy of Neon Fariman Fathi fariman@ch iut ac ir 2014 02 18 Department of Chemistry Isfahan University of technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree PhD Language FarsiMahmoud Tabrizchi m tabriz@cc iut ac ir Hossein Farrokhpour farrokhphossein@gmail com AbstractIn the first part of this thesis a theoretical and experimental study on valence photoelectron spectra of someimportant biological molecules purines and amino acids has been performed Valence photoelectron spectra ofthree purines Hypoxanthine Xanthine and Caffeine have been simulated in order to confirm the experimentalspectra reported in the literature A new method called Symmetry Adopted Coupled cluster ConfigurationInteraction SAC CI was used to calculate the position and intensity of ionization lines up to about 20 eVbinding energies In addition the photoelectron lines were assigned using Natural Bonding Orbitals NBO package Experimental studies have been performed for two amino acids alanine and proline using a modernhemispherical electron analyzer Scienta R4000 in order to obtain the He I 21 218 eV valence photoelectronspectra Moreover the thermal stability of molecules was checked continuously by increasing the temperatureand following the mass spectrum of the molecules using a quadrupole mass spectrometer while recording thephotoelectron spectrum The same theoretical work was performed for mentioned amino acids A very goodagreement between theory and experiment was observed In the second section of this thesis a new method of atomic spectroscopy in the field of optogalvanicspectroscopy is introduced The time domain of optogalvanic signal was considered as an extra dimension forthe analysis of the optogalvanic spectra A time window with a given delay was used to integrate over thedifferent time regions of the temporal OG signals for each wavelength The method enhanced the resolution ofspectra considerably so that two closed transitions which differ only by 4 pm were precisely separated Inaddition a new transition of Neon around 640 nm masked by a transition at 640 229 nm was observed andassigned using this new method Keywords Spectroscopy SAC CI Amino acids Purines Optogalvanic Two dimensional
