71Investigation of the effective parameters of electrolytic zinc powderproduction and its effect on performance of zinc silver oxide battery according to discharge curves and electrochemical impedance test Ali Hejabi Kazhghouneh a hejabi@yahoo com Oct 13 2012 Department of Materials Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiDr Ahmad Saatchi professor supervisor asaatchi12@gmail comDr Mohammad Ali Golozar professor supervisor golozar@gmail comAbstractOne of the important factors to improve performance and increase zinc silver oxide batteryenergy density is enhancement in zinc plate capacity of battery In order to enhance the capacity ofzinc plate can increase the surface area of applied powders Powder that produced byelectrochemical method be cause high surface area of the powder For this purpose a two electrodesystems zinc electrode and nickel electrode in alkaline solution is used DC source is connected tothe negative pole on the zinc electrode The flow of electrons from the source inter to electrode andcauses reducing the zinc ion present in the solution and zinc restored on the electrode surface Powder produced by this method has a high level of surface area Utilization of the active materialpowder increases the effective electrode reactant beyond helping to reduce battery weight Inaddition to access more chemical activity and less polarizing it is better that battery work at lowcurrent density More effective surface reduce the level of current passing through the unit area Electrolytic zinc powder with dendritic morphology provides more surface area diffrentparameters such as the applied current density the concentration of ZnO KOH concentration temperature and distance between electrodes have influence on the morphology and size of thepowder produced in this way in this project Zinc powder production from alkaline soloution withelectrochemical method and the effect of temperature and distance between electrodes onmorphology of the powders produced by this method was conducted using SEM images Effects ofmorphology of the powders used in the manufacture zinc electrodes on performance of zinc silveroxide battery was examined by the discharge curve and ac impedance test In this study theapplied current density of 2000 A m2 ZnO concentration of 1 M and KOH concentrations 8 Mwere considered as the fixed parameters and the distance between electrode and temperature wereconsidered as variable parameters produced powders were collected then acid washed and dried SEM images taken from the powders show that by increasing the temperature to 70 c powders aregetting into the dendritic shape This case also was observed by decreasing the distance betweenelectrodes By increasing temperature into temperature range of 85 90 C morphology of thepowders going to hunk The discharge curves also show that the increase in dendritic morphologyof the powders and subsequently increase in electrode surface area Leads to increase in dischargetime and potential of discharge Electrochemical impedance test results also show raise the level ofactive surface and decreases the charge transfer resistance with an increase in dendriticmorphology of the powders key wordsSurface area discharge zinc electrode ac impedance
