AbstractIn Online Social Networks OSNs users interact with each other by sharing their personalinformation One of the concerns in OSNs is how user privacy is protected since the OSNproviders have full control over users data The OSN providers typically store users information permanently the privacy controls embedded in OSNs offer few options tousers for customizing and managing the dissipation of their data over the network In thisthesis we propose efficient privacy protection frameworks in different architectures forOSNs that can be used to protect the privacy of users data and their online socialrelationships from third parties The recommended frameworks shift the control over datasharing back to the users by providing them with flexible and dynamic access policies Weemploy the public key broadcast encryption BE scheme as the cryptographic tool formanaging information sharing with a subset of a user s friends The privacy andcomplexity evaluations show the superiority of our approaches over previous Key Wordsonline social network privacy access control broadcast encryption IntroductionIn existing OSNs users have to accept the OSN privacy settings in exchange for free services provided Users data and their friendship information are collected and storedpermanently in the OSN storage space which is under the full control of the OSNprovider The common terms of service which users must accept grant the ownership ofall their shared content to the OSN provider In other words the ownership agreementgives all the rights to the OSN provider to use and distribute users content as they see fit For example users information can be used for commercial purposes and made accessibleto other entities by the OSN provider Additionally the current OSN setups allows the user s personal information to bedisclosed to a group of friends larger than sometimes intended Moreover groups andrelationship definitions in OSNs are often static and hard to change Online socialrelationships can change over time so only the friends who are currently granted access toshared data should be able to see it Finally it is important to provide users the ability toflexibly define new relationships and access policies to their data based on anycombination of existing relationships and friends Consequently the privacy protectingmechanism should be fully customizable to suit users privacy needs In other words shifting from provider centric to user centric is essential to better protect the privacy ofusers In this setting OSN providers are granted limited trust and users are given fullcontrol over their personal information The importance of embedding privacy in OSN is studied recently which are based on thecentralized decentralized and P2P architectures Among them GCC Zhu et all 2010 Persona Baden et all 2009 EASiER Jahid et all 2011 and Porkut Narendula 2012 are the most completed ones Generally existing solutions do not consider all aspects ofOSN users privacy requirements On the other hand they do not define users privacyrequirement clearly and completely The previous works also have limited explanationsand analysis on users common tasks in OSN In this thesis we extract the privacy principles required in the OSN design In this way wepresent privacy preserving frameworks for the OSN to mitigate the critical privacyproblems existing in current OSNs The introduced setups are presented for centralized decentralized and P2P designs
