76 Effect of Deficit Irrigation and Aquazorb Superabsorbent on Yield of Pinto Beans Phaseolus vulgaris Saeed Kiamarzi s kiamarzi@ag iut ac ir May 18 2014 Department of Water Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiBehrouz Mostafazadeh Fard behrouz@cc iut ac irAbstractApplication of proper management and using advanced techniques in order to conserve soil moisture andincrease soil moisture holding capacity are among the most effective procedures for increasing water useefficiency and consequently for improving utilization of the nation water resources Limitations in theavailability of good quality water resources forcing the researchers to find out efficient and economicmethods to increase water use efficiency Due to climate conditions of Iran which is arid and semi arid andalso due to excessive use of water in agricultural sector one of the proper techniques and one of the solutionfor the above problem is to use soil amendments such as superabsorbent polymers The use of superabsorbentpolymers improve soil physical conditions and absorb the scatter rain and other water resources which theresults is less soil water tension for arid and semi arid rejoins In order to investigate the effect of deficitirrigation and Aquazorb superabsorbent on yield of Pinto beans Phaseolus vulgaris a field study wasconducted in 2013 at the city of Dehaghan in Isfahan Province The study was conducted in split plot designand the main treatments were different amounts of irrigation water including irrigation water levels of 60 80 100 and 120 of the soil moisture deficit and the sub treatments were different amounts of Aquazorbsuperabsorbent including S0 as control treatment zero kilograms per hectare S 100 100 kilograms perhectare S200 200 kilograms per hectare and S 300 300 kilograms per hectare After land preparation theexperimental plots were obtained and the Aquazorb superabsorbent was mixed with soil up to 10 cm depthand the plots were irrigated to make the Aquazorb superabsorbent stabilized in the soil and then the bean wasplanted The characteristics including length of the main stem dry weight of vegetative parts without beanseed one hundred grain weight harvest index and bean seed yield kilograms per hectare were analyzedusing SAS statistical software and the LSD test was used for mean comparison of data The results of theanalysis of variance showed that as the superabsorbent increases the length of the main stem dry weight ofvegetative parts without bean seed one hundred grain weight and bean seed yield increases The highestincreased was belonged to treatment of 300 kilograms per hectare of superabsorbent Also as the irrigationwater increased the length of the main stem dry weight of vegetative parts without bean seed one hundredgrain weight and bean seed yield increased The highest increased was belonged to irrigation treatment of120 For harvest index there were no significant differences between superabsorbent treatment of 100kilograms per hectare and treatment of without superabsorbent The highest harvest index with value of39 8 was belonged to irrigation treatment of 80 and superabsorbent treatment of 300 kilograms perhectare In general the irrigation treatment of 80 is recommended for the area that farmers are facing eitherwith lack of irrigation water or high value of irrigation water Keywords Deficit irrigation Superabsorbent Pinto beans Yield
