Surface Modification of Polyurethane Foam with Activated Carbon and Carbon Nanotube to Enhance Oil Removal from Water Alireza Keshavarz alireza keshavarz@ce iut ac ir Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisors H Zilouei hzilouei@cc iut ac ir A Abdolmaleki abdolmaleki@cc iut ac irAbstractIn recent decades daily expansion of industrial activities on one hand and violation of the environmental rules onthe other have caused noticeable release of organic pollutants into the environment These happen throughdifferent ways like inappropriate removal and disposal of wastewaters industrial wastes emission of pollutant bypower plants and pollutant leakage from underground tanks and gas stations oil tankers and etc The presence ofthese contaminants in natural environment causes environmental destruction and spreading diseases therebyremoving these types of contaminants is crucial Oil contaminant removal procedures can be classified to chemicalprocedures biological procedures and physical procedures Among these physical procedures like adsorption bydifferent sorbents are more applicable in industries The most important factors which should be considered forchoosing an appropriate sorbent usually include high oil sorption capacity low water sorption reusability and lowcost Synthetic organic sorbents like polyurethane foam PUF activated carbon AC and multi wall carbonnanotube MWCNT are good oil sorbent due to their porous structure however they need surface and structuralmodification In this research for enhancing the PUF oil sorption capacity and oleophilic properties differentamount of AC and MWCNT 0 5 1 2 and 3 wt were grafted to the foam surface Grafting the mentionedcarbonic materials was done by focusing on reaction between the methylenediphenyl diisocyanate MDI and OHgroup existing on the surface of the MWCNT AC and PUF Synthsized sorbents were characterized by differenttechniques including FT IR spectra SEM TGA and strain elongation test Experimental results of sorption testsshowed lower water sorption in all cases surface modified foams with AC and MWCNT and the optimal amountof AC and MWCNT on the foam surface was 1 wt The surface modified sorbent with 1wt AC by adsorbing27 15 g of oil 33 21 increases in comparison with blank PUF had the best performance among the AC surfacemodified PUF The surface modified sorbent with 1wt MWCNT by adsorbing 24 75 g of oil 21 44 increasesin comparison with blank PUF had the best performance among the MWCNT surface modified PUF Reusabilityfeature of the surface modified sorbents was investigated in the case of the sorbent with the optimal amount ofcarbonic material on the surface 1 wt AC and 1wt MWCNT by 4 cycles of chemical regeneration and reuse Obtained results showed that after each cycle sorption percent decreased but sorption efficiency increasedbeacause of hydrophobicity enhancement and at the end AC surface modified sorbent saved 85 of its oilsorption capacity and MWCNT surface modified saved 85 45 of its oil sorption capacity Finally agreement ofsorption data with Langmuir Freundlich and Redlich Peterson isotherms was investigated Langmuir and Redlich Peterson isotherm showed better agreement with the data in both linear and non linear regression method incomparison with Freundlich isotherm Key wordsOil pollution Sorbent Surface modification Polyurethane foam Activated carbon Multi wallcarbon nanotube
