116 Synthesis of polymeric nanocomposite sorbent based polyurethane foam using nanoclay and activated carbon for oil pollution removal from water and wastewater Amir Ahmad Nikkhah aa nikkhah@ce iut ac ir Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor H Zilouei hzilouei@cc iut ac ir A Asadinezhad asadinezhad@cc iut ac irAbstract In recent decades daily expansion of industrial activities on one hand and disobeying the environmental ruleson the other hand was cause noticeable release of organic pollutant into environment especially the aquaticenvironments These happen through different ways like inappropriate removal and disposal of wastewaters industrial wastes pollutant emission by power plants and pollutant leakage from underground tanks and gasstations oil tankers and etc Presence of these contaminants in natural environment causes environmentaldestruction and spreading diseases thereby removing these types of contaminants is crucial Oil contaminantremoval procedures can be classified as chemical procedures biological procedures and physical procedures Among these physical procedures are more applicable in industries Physical procedure for removal of oilcontaminant includes membrane processes gravity separators gas immersion equipment and adsorption bymeans of different types of sorbents Amid physical procedures because of acceptable efficiency adsorptionis more applicable For oil contaminant removal different types of adsorbents have been studied and thesesorbents are divided into three types of synthesized organic adsorbent inorganic adsorbent and naturalorganic adsorbent Synthesized organic adsorbents because of their porous structures have high adsorptionbut their low efficiency urges the need of structure and surface modification Polyurethane is one of thesynthesized organic adsorbents which is co polymer with soft and hard structure Urethane structurecompromises the hard part and the soft part is due to the polyetheric or polyesteric structure In this projecttwo types of polyurethane foam including open cell and semi close foam were used for removing crude oilfrom water Also activated carbon and Cloisite20A nanoclay were used for structure modification strengthincrease and inducing hydrophobicity The procedure of synthesizing structure modified polyurethane foam modified by Activated carbon and Cloisite20A nanoclay is done in two stage first of which is distributionof Activated carbon and nanoclay in polyol and then the Iso agent like MDI was add to the mixture to startthe foaming and synthesizing Experimental results show that Activated carbon optimum weight percentage is 2 for open cell foam and 5 for semi close foam which caused adsorption increase up to 17 and 21respectively Activated carbon presence in foam structures has noticeably increased hydrophobicity and inoptimum adsorption capacity with 20g L initial oil concentration oil removal efficiency was increased upto 28 for open cell foam and 73 for semi close foam Nanoclay was used in open cell foam in which theoptimum weight percentage was 3 and adsorption increased up to 10 and oil removal efficiencyincreased up to 56 In current study chemical recovery method was used by means of petroleum solventslike toluene and petroleum ether which increased both oil removal efficiency and adsorption rate in all cases Chemical recovery of open cell polyurethane foam modified by nanoclay caused adsorption increase in lowto medium oil initial concentrations and decrease of adsorption and oil removal efficiency in high initialconcentrations By comparing adsorption results with adsorption isotherms like Langmuir Freundlich andRedlich Peterson datas matched the Langmuir and Redlich Peterson well For adsorbents characterization FT IR was used to validate the formation of polyurethane XRD was conducted to test the production ofnanocomposite sorbent and optical microscope was used to study the foa
