103 A new method for induction motor stator winding fault detection using current signature analysis and infrared imaging Maryam Eftekhari m eftekhari@ec iut ac ir 10 25 2014 Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Isfahan University of Technology 84156 83111 Isfahan Iran 1st Prof Mehdi Moallem moallem@cc iut ac ir 2nd Dr Saeed Sadri sadri@cc iut ac ir Department Graduate Program Coordinator Dr Mohammadali Khosrvifard Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan Iran Abstract The main objective of this dissertation is to develop a new technique for detecting stator winding short circuit faults in Induction Motor IM So modeling turn to turn short circuit fault in more than one phase and also phase to ground fault is the first novelty of this research Then a novel online and nondestructive algorithm is proposed using motor current signature analysis besides infrared imaging This technique is able to accurately detect all kinds of stator winding short circuit in three phase IM in early stage In addition locating and defining severity of the fault are the important outcomes of this technique Experimental results are included to validate the proposed models and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method using a 2 hp IM Key words Condition monitoring Induction motor Motor current signature analysis Thermography Feature extraction Introduction Three phase IM is one of the most important parts for many industrial processes that are widely used as the major work horse of industry However they are subjected to some undesirable stresses causing them some faults resulting in failure According to Motor Reliability Working Group of IEEE Industry Applications Society IAS and Electric Power Research Institute EPRI stator faults are responsible for 26 to 36 of the IM failures Grubic et al 2008 Since stator turn to turn fault is widely believed to represent the incipient stage of most motor winding failures the detection of stator turn to turn fault has drawn a lot of attention Such a fault produces high currents and winding overheating resulting in severe turn to turn phase to phase or phase to ground faults All these may lead to an irreversible damage in stator windings or in the stator core For such reasons rapid detection of incipient faults between turns during motor operation would eliminate subsequent damages and reducing repair costs and motor outage time Exhaustive surveying of diagnosing methods of stator faults in IMs has been presented in Eftekhari et al 2013 In most drive systems current sensors are already presented to provide good controllability hence by using stator currents for fault detection the number of additional sensors required for fault tolerant operation of the drive can be minimized It is important to note that most of the Motor current Signature Analyzing MCSA techniques lacked the capability of accurately estimating the extent of the fault severity In addition most of the papers deal with the detection procedure and not with the location of the fault Meanwhile a turn to turn fault in two phases is eventually possible to occur simultaneously and it may even lead to more catastrophic consequences than the case of fault in only one stator winding however there has not been much research effort in this area
