69 Synthesis of poly amic hydrazide as a novel polymer and its magnetic nanocomposite and their application in removal of Pb2 and Cd2 from industrial wastes Hossein Habibi habibih191 @yahoo com Department of Chemistry Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Kiomars Zargoosh Dr Kiomarszargoosh@cc iut ac irAbstractA novel polymer poly amic hydrazide PAH was synthesised via 1 1 condensationreaction between pyromellitic dianhydride and terephthalohydrazide in DMSO Thestructure of the polymer was confirmed by FT IR and NMR In the second stage magneticnanoparticles magnetite Fe3O4 were prepared by the precipitation method The preparedFe3O4 nanoparticles were characterized by TEM FT IR and XRD The TEM imagesshowed that the diameters of the Fe3O4 nanoparticles are about 5 15 nm In the third stage a novel nanocomposite was prepared via reaction between Fe3O4 nanoparticles and PAHunder ultrasonication assisted conditions Then the ability of PAH and Fe3O4@PAH nano composite for removal of heavy metal ions Pb2 and Cd2 was investigated The effects ofpH contact time metal ion concentration temperature and background electrolytes on theadsorption characteristics of both adsorbents were studied The maximum adsorptioncapacities of Pb2 and Cd2 with PAH adsorbent were 119 and 55 mg g 1 respectively Themaximum adsorption capacities of Pb 2 and Cd2 with Fe3O4@PAH adsorbent were 139and 103 mg g 1 respectively In addition it was found that presence of amide and carboxylbinding sites on the surface of both PAH and Fe3O4@PAH adsorbents can notably reducethe interferences of the alkaline earth metal ions The assumption that the metal ionadsorption is due to complex formation between active sites of the adsorbent and heavymetal ions was further confirmed by investigating the adsorption isotherms and kinetics The desorption experiments under batch conditions revealed that the both adsorbents arereusable adsorbent for practical removal of heavy metal ions The practical ability of theprepared adsorbents for removal of heavy metal ions from industrial samples was evalutedusing different industrial wastewaters from Moham industrial complex and Hessam paintmanufacturing company The obtained results showed that PAH polymer and Fe3O4@PAHnanocomposite can be used for removal of heavy metal ions from industrial wastes Key Words Magnetic nanoparticle Poly amic hydrazide Pyromellitic dianhydride Heavy metal Fe3O4 Terephthalohydrazide
