70 Effect of Three Tillage and Planting Methods on MachinePerformance and Parameters of Irrigated Wheat in the Cold Region of Fars Province Eghlid Behnam Cheraghi b cheraghi@ag iut ac ir June 15 2014 Department of Agricultural Machinery Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiA Masoumi Assist Prof masoumi@cc iut ac ir A Hemmat Prof ahemmat@cc iut ac ir AbstractWheat Triticum aestivum is important crop to feed human and livestock Wheat as the main source ofcalories needed by the people and has the highest area under cultivation in the country Variousconventional tillage methods are used for preparing the seedbed and planting wheat Due to rising costs offossil fuels increase in soil erosion and shortage in water resources new technologies in agriculture areneeded to achieve higher yield In recent years conservation tillage systems that include a wide range ofminimum tillage shallower and with less frequency and no till systems have become more common insome part of the country These systems typically save more moisture in the soil and consequently reducewater consumption In this study the effect of three different tillage planting methods includingminimum tillage with a combined tillage machine chisel disk roll packer at 15 cm depth and plantingwith a combination drill conventional tillage with a moldboard plow alone at the depth of 25 cm andplanting with a combination drill and a direct drill method by using a direct seeding machine at thedepth of 8 cm on fuel consumption water use efficiency effective capacity of farm machines tillage andplanting costs yield and yield components of irrigated wheat in two rotation beans wheat and potato wheat were studied in a field located at Eqlid Fars province The research was conducted in a randomizedcomplete block design with three treatments and six replications The results showed that the fuelconsumption in the direct drill method and minimum tillage planting by combination drill compared tomoldboard plowing combination drill planting reduced by 69 and 23 on contrary the field capacitywas increased 29 9 and 34 7 respectively The results of combined analysis of variance showed thattillage planting methods had significant effects on yield and yield components except 1000 kernelweight But had no significant effects on water use efficiency the first order interaction of rotation andtillage method had significant effect on water use efficiency The maximum water use efficiency by asmuch as 1 59 kg m3 was related to Direct seeding method in Beans Wheat rotation and minmum wateruse efficiency by as much as 1 33 kg m3 was related to Direct seeding method in Potato Wheat rotation The maximum 5305 kg ha and the minimum 5202 kg ha yield was related to mimimumtillage planting by combination drill and conventional tillage planting by a combination drill respectively Direct seeding method had higher yield than conventional tillage planting with combinationdrilland had no significant difference with minimum tillage planting by combination drill Keywords Tillage Wheat Machine Field capacity Fuel consumption Yield
