84 Study of Morphological Variation and Self Pollinated Seeds Production in Yarrow Achillea millefolium L Populations under Two Irrigation Regimes Hossein Hashemi Fath Abadi Hashemihossein85@yahoo com November 16 2014 Department of Agronomy and Plant Breeding Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 8111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiMehdi Rahimmalek E mail rahimmalek@cc iut ac irGhodratollah Saeidi E mail gsaeidi@cc iut ac irAbstractThe medicinal herbs play an important role in the health of human communities Many of wild plantspecies have adapted to the climatic conditions of the Iran and are endemic wild species One of thesemedicinal plants is Yarrow Achillea millefolium L with different medicinal and ornamental uses A millefolium is widely spread in Northern hemisphere and Iran In this study 10 populations of this plantspecies from the countries of Iran Austria Slovenia Japan USA England UK Spain Lithuania andCanada were evaluated in a randomized complete block design with three replications were studied forsome morphological and physiological traits under two irrigation regimes including 50 and 90 mmevaporation from pan class A The inflorescences of a plant divided into two parts and then half of themwas covered with a bag for self pollination and the others let to have out cross pollination Afterphysiological seed ripening some characteristics such as number of seeds produced by self pollination andout cross pollination were counted The results of analysis of variance showed significant differencesamong the populations for morphological and physiological traits in both irrigation regimes The resultsanalysis of combined showed that days to 50 flowering days to complete flowering days to maturityseeds diameter and number of florets per inflorescence plant height leaf length chlorophyll content proline content and essential oil content in subjects affected by irrigation conditions Cluster analysisdivided the populations in four groups in irrigation condition 1 while it classified them in three groups inirrigation condition 2 Populations from Iran and UK in irrigation condition 1 and Populations from Iranand Lithuania in irrigation condition 2 had the most genetic distance in dendrogram that are more suitablefor further breeding programs Principal component analysis revealed five factors that explained 80 oftotal variation in both irrigation conditions Phenotypic correlations between traits showed high negativecorrelation between characteristics days to flowering and plant height Among the populations from theUSA and UK had higher flowering period larger inflorescence and more compacted florets while thepopulations from Austria possessed variation for flower colors Slovenia population with the most numberof branches can be used for pharmaceutical and non pharmaceutical livestock feed The highest essentialoil yield 0 24 was obtained in a population from the USA The number of self and out cross pollinatedseeds per plant showed high variation among the populations The highest and the lowest number of self pollinated seeds per plant were recorded for the populations from the UK 340 seeds and Canada 0 seeds respectively In overall the populations from the UK and Lithuania showed the lowest variation for thestudied traits in both irrigation regimes Key words Yarrow Morphological characters Irrigation regime Self pollinated seeds
