65Assessment of Physical and Chemical Variations of Windborn Dust over Kerman province Iran Mehran Hamdamju Email address Hamdamju@gmail com Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc language Farsi Reza Jafari reza jafari@cc iut ac ir Alireza Rashki arrashki@gmail comAbstractDust storms originated from the arid and desert regions over the globe are considered asNatural Hazards with adverse effects on environment air quality agriculture ecosystemsand human health Shahdad region is located in the Kerman province Iran adjacent to theLut desert in a severe arid environment that is directly influenced by dust storms mostlyoriginating from the Lut desert In this study dust samples were collected from five installedstations in Shahdad during spring and summer 2013 In addition five surface soil sampleswere collected from 0 5cm at northern parts of the study area in order to determine the originof the airborne dust XRD analysis shows that dust mineralogy in Shahdad primarilycontains quartz 35 45 calcite 21 25 Plagioclase 8 12 muscovite 6 11 orthoclase 5 dolomite 4 and gypsum 3 in addition to a little content ofchlorite and cristobalite Analysis of the soil samples reveals that quartz halite calcite plagioclase muscovite dolomite and chlorite contribute to 32 18 16 11 10 5 and 5 respectively compromised the most dominant minerals however a small amountof gypsum orthoclase cristobalite and kaolinite were also present XRF analysis showedthat MgO Na2O Fe2O3 Al2O3 CaO LOI and SiO2 are among the most dominant oxidesof the dust samples The station D located at the central part of the study region is lessaffected by the dust storms due to its larger distance from the dust origin eastern part of thedesert The mineralogical composition in this station seems to differentiate in comparisonto the other stations while Sr and Ba are substantial components of rare elements accordingto XRF analysis Furthermore estimates of Enrichment Factors EFs for all elementsshowed a natural origin of them except for the station D Keywords Desert born dust XRD XRF enrichment factor Shahdad
