75 Air Pollution Assessment Using Multi Criteria Evaluation Case study Isfahan Province Hazhir Karimi E mail hazhir karimi25@gmail com Date of submission 9 6 2014 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 8311 IranDegree M Sc Language PersianSupervisors Alireza Soffianian Nourollah MirghaffariAbstract Air pollution is known as one of the major environmental problems especially in areaswhere pollution sources and the human population are concentrated Economic development population growth and industrialization are the main sources of air pollution Then monitoring quantifying assessment and determine air pollution potential known as suitablemethod to improving air quality In this research GIS based Multi Criteria Evaluation MCE approach was used for assessment and mapping of air pollution in the province of Isfahan Combined MCE with GIS is an advanced method for air pollution studies so that improvesthe GIS capability in spatial analysis and MCE in multi factors analysis Natural andanthropogenic factors were selected as influencing factors on the air pollution potential Industries activity traffic and population were identified as sub criteria for anthropogenicfactors Precipitation wind speed and climate were the sub criteria for natural resources Theanalytical structure was defined based on the important factors influencing air pollutionpotential All the selected criteria and sub criteria were converted to information layers and theprocess of standardization and weighting were performed To produce the final map of airpollution potential the layers were combined using Weighted Linear Combination WLC method Central counties and northern of province were recognized as the regions with highair pollution load On other hand the meteorological conditions is not very suitable forreducing air pollution Counties located in the East and Northeastern of province which havenot the air pollution load present the average pollution potential due to unsuitable conditionsof meteorological parameters Industrial activity and population concentration increases the airpollution potential The most favorable meteorological condition was observed in westerncounties due to the high precipitation constant wind and humid climate Final map wasassorted into five suitability classes within the study area i e very low low moderate highand very high air pollution potential which represented 2 45 29 21 and 3 of thestudy area respectively It was concluded there is direct correlation between criteria so thatindustrial regions attract more people and followed the increase of traffic Also meteorologicalparameters have an important role in reducing contamination The results of this research canbe useful for the land use planning industrial zones site selection as well as the air pollutionmonitoring and control programs Key Words Multi Criteria Evaluation GIS Weighted Linear Combination Air Pollution Potential
